Carolyn Bloom is a fibre artist based in Sleepy Hollow, New York, right along the Hudson River. For nearly two decades Carolyn has been fully immersed in the world of fibre arts.

Her designs have been published through Interweave Press and Twist Collective. Her artwork has also been shown at the Donald Gallery in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

“I’m a self-proclaimed aficionado of yarn. I love its endless possibilities, the stories it tells, the connections it enables and the creativity it inspires. Through this medium, I have become a knitter, crocheter, designer and a photographer. “

Carolyn’s latest design work has been the exploration of adding embroidery to stockinette and single crochet. She has been inspired to explore how the addition of other handwork, such as sashiko, huck embroidery, kogin and cross stitch, can enhance simple handmade fabric.

In her “Embroidery on Stockinette” workshop, Carolyn will take her students through her technique for embroidering on straight stockinette turning both the right and the wrong side of the work into a canvas for embroidery resulting in a reversible piece of fabric. The possibilities are endless as it’s just as applicable to garments as it is to home furnishings, accessories , anything you can think of!

Embroidery on Stockinette

In the workshop you’ll be introduced to the concept of ‘anchor’ stitches on both the right and wrong side of a stockinette swatch. This is what allows your work to be fully reversible allowing you to achieve two distinct designs on both sides of a piece of fabric. You’ll be working on a swatch you’ve knit ahead of time and with your new found skills you’ll be able to apply them to whatever you fancy!

Carolyn’s workshop will be taking place on the ZOOM platform making it possible for anyone to join regardless of which time zone your in! We are so happy to be able to facilitate these online classes for you to continue supporting our makers and bringing people together to celebrate our shared love of fibre crafts.  Embroidery on Stockinette will be taking place online on Saturday the 5th of December. More info and booking available on our website.

You can see more of Carolyn’s beautiful work on her website bloomhandmadestudios.com and Instagram @BloomHandmadeStudio or you tube.

Celia Pym Mending Workshop

We have scheduled more mending workshops with the very talented and lovely Celia Pym! Also on the ZOOM platform, Celia’s workshops have proved to be very popular and frequently sell out quickly.

Celia takes you through the exploration of textile repair on knitted fabric and how and why we do it. A very thoughtful and beautiful approach to mending.

We currently have Saturdays the 20th of February and 27th of March spots available. You can book your place directly through the webshop or give us a ring in the shop if you need any more information. If for some reason the workshop you wanted sells out, please give us a ring or send us an email so we can put you on a waiting list for the next one.

We love handmade beauty at Loop and have recently received some beautiful embroidered rosette brooches from Kimiyo Kuratomi in Tokyo, Japan. These beautiful handmade brooches are inspired by the traditional  British goldwork embroidery technique used in religious and royal commissions. Goldwork has a luxurious quality due to the various metal threads combined with other embroidery techniques producing a sumptuous and elegant effect. Each brooch is a like a little piece of framed art and would be perfect for embellishing a special coat, hat or accessory.
