An early Christmas treat has arrived! Introducing our latest free pattern Alvaro, a textured colour block scarf that uses the cosy soft Illimani Cadena. It’s the pattern you’ve been waiting to solve those last minute gift knitting dilemmas!

Regular readers will know Rachel from her other free patterns she has designed for Loop, such as the Hawick Cowl and Spring Bloom Mitts. With Alvaro she’s taken it back to basics with a classic scarf – “I wanted to create a unisex design that would be a fast and relaxing knit for both newer and more experienced knitters. You can create so many amazing stitch patterns with simple knit and purl stitches and this approach provided the starting point for Alvaro.

“Three different and reversible stitch patterns, combined with alternating blocks of colour, provide a basic template which you can mix, match and play with to create your own design. Simply follow the instructions in the pattern or swap the colours and textures around to make this pattern your own.”

Alvaro is named after the founder of yarn company Illimani, whose chunky Cadena has been used for this pattern.  A dreamy blend of high grade merino and alpaca ensures that Cadena is suitable for even the most discerning of necks! We especially love the chainette construction of this yarn which gives it that extra texture, making ‘a squooshy bundle of joy!’ as Rachel puts it!

You’ll need three skeins of the Illimani Cadena for Alvaro and Rachel’s version features a trio of greys for a classic look.  ( Grey SFN43,  Light Grey SFN41, Dark Grey SFN75) Of course we’ve had fun imagining what other combinations you could try.

All you need to add is a pair of 10mm needles and you’ll find that this project simply flies along, even for those who find themselves starting on Christmas Eve! Or why not gift the project to someone this Christmas? Wrap up the three skeins with a pair of needles and you’ve got the beginning of a relaxing holiday knit for a fellow knitter to enjoy.
