Lucinda Guy and Twined Knitting at Loop

Lucinda Guy and Twined Knitting at Loop

A new workshop has just gone up on our classes list.  Lucinda Guy, author of Crochet Designs for Girls and Boysand Northern Knits, will teach how to make authentic Scandinavian mittens using the traditional Swedish twined knitting technique.

Lucinda will teach Tvaandsstickat, or ‘two-ended’ knitting, where the knitter uses both ends of the same ball of yarn and then twists the two yarns after each stitch, producing a uniform fabric of double thickness. This fabric which is smooth, firm, and less elastic than conventional knitting makes an ideal base for embroidery and is particularly suited to making mittens and socks. The class will be taught through the making of a mitten and will include patterns to take home and try. See our website page for more information.

I hope I get a chance to sit in on this class. I haven’t tried twined knitting, although it has been on my eager-to-do list for a while. I love the look of it and the idea of embroidering on top. It would make a great construction technique for folk bags and a chance to play with my beloved Spindrift as well!
