Piece of Cake: Madelinetosh collaboration with Norah Gaughan and Alabama Chanin is a recipe for delight

The Madelinetosh has teamed up with the Alabama Chanin School of Making to bring out a very special kit and we’re so excited to have it in the shop.

The Fern Cowl is designed by Norah Gaughan in a custom colour of Tosh Wool + Cotton called Plain Cake, which was inspired by a delicious slice of cake Madelinetosh CEO Laura Zander had at Alabama Chanin.

This beautiful cowl features twisted stitches, a picot edge on the top and bottom, and very simple embroidery mimicking the Alabama Chanin fern stencil motif. The kit is perfect for adventurous beginners and experienced crafters alike. It comes in a Loop cotton bag with the Fern Cowl pattern (a printed card as well as a more detailed PDF), one skein each of Tosh Wool + Cotton in Plain Cake and Oak, and an extra 35 yard mini cake of Plain Cake to allow for differences in gauge without requiring the knitter to buy a whole extra skein. As a bonus, the designers have thrown in a printed recipe for the cake that inspired the Plain Cake colour for a multi-sensory immersion in this delicious collaboration. Norah talked with Madelinetosh about the collaboration and the inspiration for her design in an interview on Instagram.

Norah Gaughan is one of our favourite designers here at Loop. She also designed our ‘Sous Sous‘ sweater, which we absolutely adore. We’re so happy to be able to feature her work!

Pre-Order Laine Magazine Issue 12

Pre-orders of Laine Magazine Issue 12 for Autumn 2021 begin today! Laine is always incredibly beautiful and inspiring and this issue is no different. There are so many beautiful patterns and articles about some of our favourite people in the knitting world, including a piece about mYak, a perennial favourite, and an interview with Judit Gummlich, whom Loop founder Susan met at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival a few years ago and “completely flipped” over her embroidered knitwear. Weighing in at 148 pages and 13 beautifully photographed knitting patterns, this issue contains enough goodness in the form of recipes, reviews and columns to see you well into the autumn. Pattern pages for this issue will go live on the Laine website and on Ravelry on 3 September and pre-orders through Loop will ship for the 10 September release date. We will also be hosting a QuaintMarie Lady giveaway in partnership with Laine to celebrate the launch. Stay tuned for details on Instagram and the blog!

A book, magazine and kit from Pom Pom Press

We are excited the release of Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 38 for Autumn 2021 and the Pom Pom Press book Moon and Turtle, both publishing on Monday 16 August, and to celebrate we are offering a kit of one of the gorgeous shawls in the new issue of Pom Pom Quarterly.

The Silvatica Shawl kit, which is available for pre-order now, features a striking graphic design from the imagination of Anna Huseman. It uses a rich colour palette of ITO yarns: Urugami, which has a twisted paper core wrapped in fluffy wool, and ITO Sensai Mohair and Silk. Sensei is one of our most popular yarns with its incredibly beautiful colour palette. A strand of ITO Urugami is held throughout, periodically joined by a strand of contrast mohair yarn to make a striking piece that’s all knit in garter stitch. The kit includes all the yarn needed for the shawl, as well as a Loop shopper/project bag. The pattern is available in Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 38. These kits will ship in mid-September.

In the meantime, the rest of Pom Pom’s Autumn 2021 issue contains a lot of inspiration. This issue celebrates trees, with cable patterns imitating labyrinthine root systems, colourwork imitating dappled forests and patterns drawing on fairy-tale lore. This issue also addresses the link between the textile industry and pollution and demonstrates how to make charcoal and ink from plants. With nine knit and crochet patterns and a ginger pudding recipe to boot, there is something for everyone.

Moon and Turtle, another Pom Pom publication and the first collaboration between Japanese Canadian twin sisters Sachiko and Kiyomi Burgin, will also be released on Monday the 16th and is available for pre-order now. These designers have a real knack for bringing contemporary flair to traditional garments. Weaving the theme of duality throughout the book, the the twins present nine gorgeous knit patterns that are gender neutral and graded up to a 62-inch chest. The designs from Moon and Turtle are available on Ravelry to help you plan your knits. We’re especially excited about the PokaPoka hat, which uses Qing Merino Singles combined with Qing Kid Mohair Silk. Not only does the hat look extra cosy, but the vast array of colours in these yarns mean it’s endlessly customisable. Loop’s range of Merino Sock yarn, Dk yarns, Worsted weight yarns, Aran and Silk Mohair will also come in handy for these knits.
