Tiny Tassels Tutorial

This is the tassel making method we’ve used in the Tiny Tassels shawl pattern. These tassels can be made bigger by using a wider piece of cardboard in place of the upper needle.

Tools and Materials

  • two short 5mm needles
  • darning needle
  • length of yarn for tassel
  • small scissors

Step 1: Hold the two knitting needles together, parallel to the edge. Bring darning needle with yarn through the top edge stitch, laying the tail over the top of the knitting.

Step 2: Wrap yarn around needles, holding the tail,with thumb so that it doesn’t pull through.

Step 3: Repeat process 10 times.

Step 4: Bring the tail upwards.

Step 5: Bring the darning needle through the centre of the the two knitting needles.

Step 6: Pass the darning needle down through the knitting needles and cinch the waist of the tassel.

Step 7: Bring the darning needle up through the cinched wrap.

Step 8: Repeat the wrap, cinch and needle through wrap a few times.

Step 9: Bring all the ends upwards. Pull out the bottom needle and tighten cinch further.

Step 10: Wrap again and bring the needle up through all the wraps.

Step 11: Remove second needle and trim the loops of tassel.

Step 12: Trim off tails.
