Layering Up with Laine 30
It’s nearly time for the new issue of Laine! We always anticipate these releases with bated breath, and we’re especially excited for this issue as we’re seriously in the mood to plan our autumn knits.
Laine 30 is themed around “Layers”, our favourite way to dress for the autumn. With pieces you can easily add or subtract, coping with any weather is a breeze. The plush and wearable designs in this issue come from 15 incredible designers. And as always, there’s more to love than just the patterns, including features on special yarn shops, sheep farmers, and styling. Laine 30 is available to preorder now and will launch (and ship) on the 27th of August. Let’s take a look at a few of these fabulous knits!
Huurre by Anniina Juuti
Meaning “frost” in Finnish, the Huurre vest is the perfect piece to stay cosy with. Whether you wear it with a shirt on a mild autumn morning or layer it under a sweater to keep out some serious chill, the chunky cables, sweet mock turtle neck, and side vents are sure to keep you at just the right temperature. This pattern was designed using De Rerum Natura Gilliatt, one of our go-to yarns. With nearly 50 colours to choose from, we’re sure you’ll find one to suit! And once you’ve selected your hue, check out our lovely buttons to add a unique finishing touch!
Limina by Inese Sang
For keeping warm, there are few garments more versitile than a shawl. Draped over your arms, wrapped tightly over your shoulders, or even pulled up around your head and neck, a shawl really can do it all. We adore this striped version by Inese Sang, whose work we’ve admired for years. Using Biches & Bûches Le Petit Lambswool and a strand of silk mohair held together, Limina is light, soft, and dreamy.
Offbeat by Yi̇ği̇tcan Vatansever
If you’re like most knitters, a scarf is probably the first thing you ever made. But just because it can be basic doesn’t mean it’s boring, and Offbeat shows just how much fun it can be to play with and wear a scarf. Drape it dramatically over one shoulder or wrap it around your neck until you’re all bundled up, this piece is a stunner. Yi̇ği̇tcan used John Arbon Textiles Appledore DK, but this would also look beautiful in Knit by Numbers DK. This is the kind of colour play the KBN numerical system was designed for!
Ljung by Karin & Stina Weststrand
The sister designer duo Karin and Stina Weststrand have given us this wonderfully cosy, super gorgeous layer that will look just as home in the city as it will among the trees. Ljung, which is the Sweedish word for heather, uses clever construction so you’re actually only working with one colour at a time to achieve a really intricate final piece. The colours you choose can dial the contrast up or down, but you’re sure to love it no matter what. This sweater calls for an Aran or worsted weight yarn, like La Bien Aimée Corrie Worsted or Rico Soft Merino Aran.
What is autumn layering without a cosy hat? Sara Ottosson’s Shape of Water beanie will be up to any weather you throw at it as temperatures drop, and the wavy twist inspired by autumn’s woodland streams puts it head and shoulders above the rest. This pattern uses a merino DK and a bouclé DK yarn held together. Sara designed the hat using Isager’s Jensen and Bouclé, but there are lots of different combos that could work, like Gepard’s Pura Lana and Teddy Dear! We adore absolutely every one of the pieces in this issue of Laine, and we can’t wait to delve into the whole issue. Preorder your copy now!
Classes at Loop!
We’re so excited for visits from some wonderful artists over the coming months to teach classes at Loop! We’re always thrilled when people whose work we admire share their craft! First, Aitor Saraiba will return to Loop on September 19th to host another class at the gorgeous London Crafts Council a short walk from Loop. His Amulet Workshop allows you to create your own talisman — a unique creative expression that is all your own using materials from a kit provided by Aitor. We’ve had a few of these kits in the shop before and they are just stunning. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to stitch like this with Aitor in the lovely Crafts Council building, which is an incredible space to be able to work in. Then, in November and in February, we’ll welcome Anne Kelly, whose folk stitching draws from traditions all over the world. In her Folk Art Sampler Workshop (November 7th) and Folk Book Workshop (February 20th, 2027), both held at Frequency Coffee next door to Loop, participants will have the chance to learn about different craft cultures and techniques before designing original works intended to be continued at home. You can browse and stock up for supplies for this class in our haberdashery section. There are details of what you’ll need on each class page, and feel free to let your imagination run wild!
If you’re just starting out or looking to learn a new craft this autumn, our Beginner Crochet series is perfect! Held on two consecutive Saturdays, this class will give you all the building blocks you’ll need to create fun and functional crochet pieces. You don’t need to have any stitching experience at all to benefit from this class, and it’s also great for people who have tried crochet in the past and had trouble figuring it out. This autumn’s session will be held on October 24th & 31st in the shop, and all the materials you need will be provided. See you there!
