A Bounty of Beautiful Yarns
The final weeks of August are always so wonderful. As we soak up the last of the summer holidays and begin to look towards the season ahead, there tends to be a bit of respite from the daily grind. And of course it’s a perfect time to start lining up your autumn knits!
And boy do we have some fodder for those autumnal knitting plans! This week at the shop we’ve received a treasure trove of inspiring yarns that are sure to spark your imagination.
In the mood for something textured and bumpy but tired of the hard-to-knit boucle yarns of the past? Enter Woolfolk Flette. This fabulous yarn is the DK younger sibling to Woolfolk’s Flette Bulky, which we loved enough we used it in the pattern for the Cloud Cardigan. Well, just like Flette got a little sister, Cloud will also be getting a little sister this autumn, when we launch a version of this much-loved cardigan for babies and toddlers!
Flette feels like cashmere but wears like merino and is perfectly suited to creating simple modern silhouettes. It’s a wonderful cosy yarn for all autumnal knits, whether you want to knit Cloud or something else.
If you want to work with natural tones this autumn, you can’t go wrong with Isager Eco Soft. Fuzzy, warm, and totally un-dyed, this yarn is a super soft take on the rustic look. The colour variations here are down to natural variations in the colour of the alpaca hair (the yarn is composed of camelid alpaca and organic pima cotton) and with a Oeko-Tex standard 100 certification you can rest assured nothing harmful goes into processing this gorgeous fibre. Eco Soft is a great substitute for patterns where a strand of mohair is held double with another yarn. This DK weight yarn can replace both strands! Just make sure you swatch well to check your gauge.
Schoppel Wolle’s Zauberballs are a little bit magic, combining up to 10 colours in a fabulous twist that gradually shifts through gradations as you knit or crochet, creating some really beautiful and unexpected colour effects. It’s also an excellent yarn to use if you want to try your hand at a pair of socks this autumn, though it’s equally suited to scarves, cowls, or bringing a wild stripe to whatever you’re working on.
The Zauberball selection that has just arrived contained a few balls of the coveted new colours inspired by the incredible textile work of the Irish knitter Kieran Foley. Early Autumn, Late Autumn, Warm Botanical Garden, Cool Botanical Garden, and Dark Roses are the five hues inspired by Kieran’s seriously colourful work, but they’re selling fast. Madeleinetosh beauties Merino Light, Pashmina, and Copper Glitter Merino Light have arrived in all their glory. These are really lovely wools that go such a long way, and they’re seriously versatile — perfect for anything from socks to lace projects — and to top it off they’re all machine washable. Merino Light is single ply 100% wool and we have 100 colours for you to choose from. Pashmina blends wool with silk and goat cashmere for an extra luxurious feel, and the subtle sparkle of Copper Glitter Merino Light brings a little fun and festivity to any occasion.
Qing Fibre‘s softest, smooshiest, most delicious Melted Baby Suri and shiny, silky Dashing, and luxurious Super Soft DK are stocked up and we’re in love all over again. We cannot stop singing the praises of Layla Qing, the genius behind these yarns. The things she does with colour ought to be impossible, but she pulls it off every single time. Gorgeous ethically sourced fibres form the base of these yarns and they’re hand-dyed here in London. These yarns are such a treat.
The return of a Loop favourite! We’ve had a delightful delivery of Kaliko project bags in both Drawstring and Crossbody styles. Ania Grzeszek, the genius designer behind these gorgeous bags, started Kaliko as a side-hustle before leaving her day job as an architect to pursue textile work full time. In her studio in Berlin, Ania hand prints one-of-a-kind creations on custom-dyed organic fibres. Beyond the beauty of their exterior, these are fantastically functional bags, with two pockets sewn into the linen lining of the drawstring version and three pockets in the crossbody version. The crossbody version has a magnet closure to keep your project secure but accessible, and the strap is also easily removable so you can use your bag as a regular drawstring project bag.
