Bringing the Beauty of Hedgehog Fibres to Tiny Tassels!
Everyone has a pattern they just can’t stop making. Whether you need one in every colour for your own wardrobe or you need everyone you know to have one of their own, some pieces are worth making over and over.
For us, it’s the Tiny Tassels Shawl. Since we first launched this beauty of a pattern back in 2018 we’ve made umpteen versions (and loved seeing all of yours too!) It’s a project that travels brilliantly when it’s on your needles and when it’s finished, and it never fails to get compliments. Over the past eight years we’ve created kits for Tiny Tassels featuring yarns from some of our favourite yarn makers, and we’re thrilled to announce there’s a new one in town. The Hedgehog Tiny Tassels Kit is the latest in this illustrious line, and it’s totally wonderful. This is our very first version of Tiny Tassels using Hedgehog Fibres, and we couldn’t be more chuffed.
Based in Cork, Ireland, Beata Jezek is the ambitious creator behind Hedgehog Fibres (Jezek means hedgehog in Beata’s native Slovakian!) Unlikely as it may sound, we have the financial crisis of 2008 to thank for this brilliant yarn: it was after losing her job during the crisis that Beata first picked up a pair of knitting needles. While she admits her initial efforts were a bit wonky, she soon learned to love the craft, and quickly started looking for something better than the drab synthetic yarns she was working with. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say, and invent she did!
After a few experiments hand-dyeing yarns for her own projects, she piqued the interest of the other members of her knitting group with her beautiful, creative, colourful yarns. Before long, she realised her wonderful hobby could actually be a full-time career. She started selling her yarns on Etsy, and then built her own site. Within two years of leaving her job, Beata had a new one of her own making. And in the years since, she has been able to hire all the members of the knitting group who first gave her the confidence! Today Hedgehog Fibres is a small company of dedicated people — women, mothers, creators — and Beata takes great pride in “stealing great people out of unhappy jobs”.
The Hedgehog Tiny Tassels Kit is launching today as a preorder, with kits shipping during the first week of August. Each kit contains a full skein of Hedgehog Sock Yarn in “Artifact” for the main body of the shawl along with the perfect amount of Hedgehog Sock Yarn in “Pow” or The Uncommon Thread’s Uncommon Everyday in “Rusty Nail” for the tassels, as well as the printed Tiny Tassels pattern and a Loop project bag. The kit saves you from buying a full skein for the tassels and having loads left over.There’s also a great tutorial on making the tassels. If you have your own colourway in mind, we also sell Hedgehog Fibres yarns à la carte. The sock yarn is truly gorgeous for this pattern!
