Beautiful Buttons
Ready to add the finishing touches to your latest hand knit? We’ve been musing over our selection of buttons this week as we prepare ourselves for the colder weather and making sure those works in progress get the perfect match. It’s also the right time to freshen the look of old winter coats and jackets by updating them with a new set of buttons.
So, have a ponder over that button tin (we all have one, right?) and we’ll show you some of our favourites and some new treats too…
Whether you are feeling distinctly autumnal, or just taking a stroll through a park, you’ll need a suitably woodland themed button. Fasten your thickest knitwear with a golden brown Flat Back Toggle, an elegant Moose Horn or for really big knits use a Chunky Scrimshaw Toggle. When using toggles with a bulky yarn, you often don’t need a button hole as the tip can be poked in between the stitches – like in our free pattern the Grey Owl Cowl!
And if you don’t spot any wildlife, then these mother of pearl chaps are the next best thing! The Pearl Laser Deer and the Pearl Laser Fox both have a beautiful gold shimmer, similar to the Hunt Button with its iridescent surface.
Our Waterbuffalo Horn Stag, though not technically a button, can be customised with a piece of material to create a shank, or you can glue on a brooch back to create a super statement clasp. For something smaller you may know the Bambi Shell Button from our Mignon cardigan as it is just the size for little knits. And we have flora covered too with these adorable Mushroom Buttons!
And while we’re mentioning flora, we love these ceramic lace style buttons. Each one is handmade by designer maker Laura Walker, her mission being to create, ‘extraordinary and exquisite pieces for…those who have a love of handmade unique objects.‘
We also have dainty blooms adorning our buttons made of shell such as the Laser Flower Shell, Shell Floral Buttons and Patterned Laser Shell. You may sense a theme there, but they really are one of our favourites as they come in such a range of colours and the shimmer of shell is so complimentary to knitwear.
If you favour something a little more robust then our Bakelite Style Flower Buttons , Daisy and cute little Flower Buttons are all made from plastic.
For the ultimate statement button, the selection above are all hand carved bone. The detail and character on each one makes them truly special. All of these buttons have a shank on the back for sewing, apart from the rectangular stag which again, you can customise into a brooch.
Laura Walker’s buttons feature again in our selection of emblem buttons, this time with her crown design. For those of you who like a classic look, our wood style anchor design or Sailor buttons with a old brass finish look perfect on a peacoat – for girls or guys!
Our crest buttons in either the leather look brown or the metal and gold coat of arms add a regal touch. Also we love these Roman Pewter-Look buttons that are new in for the Autumn!
It really is a joy to find the most adorable buttons for you! Above are some of our favourites that look great on little kids knits (and yes, us big kids love them too!)
Our wooden mouse and chick buttons are admired by everyone who visits the shop and look so cute peeping out of a button hole. With them is a friendly rabbit offering a bunch of flowers! This vintage button also comes in pink and green. Two other characters are the lovely Bambi Shell button and this cute little scotty dog made from mother of pearl
The most dainty design must be our tiny spirograph buttons, but then again the detail on our Red Riding Hood buttons is rather special too! And how about a button with a contrast yarn stitched around the edge to inspire your knits and add a pop of colour?
And the good news is we now have several new designs that have arrived for autumn! These Ceramica buttons have a pretty bouquet design and come in two sizes – ideal for knits that need a smaller buttons at the cuff.
Or these new Floral Geometric Buttons with a gold pattern are just the thing to give a festive look to a plain jacket.
And we love the abstract design of the Cocco Fantasy Buttons and classic floral of the pretty Roses Button.
Also, we have drawn a name out of the hat for last week’s giveaway! We were offering you lovely readers the chance to win three balls of the Orkney Angora that we used for our latest free pattern – the Hawick Cowl. And the winner is….. Instagram user Amberweinberg! Congratulations! We will be in touch to let you know how you can claim your prize.
And don’t worry if you didn’t win this time, we have regular giveaways on the blog so stay tuned for more!
Happy Knitting, Crocheting and Buttoning!
Hi, I really wanted to enter last week’s giveaway, but I don’t have an Instagram account. Are you going to switch over to Instagram? I hope not.
Hi Judith!
Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere – the weekly blog updates will stay the same. We just like Instagram too, so will host some competitions there occasionally.
Thanks for reading the blog!
