Crazy for cables!
With the release of Norah Gaughan’s stunning new book Knitted Cable Sourcebook, we thought we’d give the stage to an all time favourite technique, so bust out your cable needles!
A true classic in the very sense of the word, cable knitting has been the intricate design choice for generations upon generations. Who doesn’t get the image of a traditional Aran jumper in their mind when thinking about cabling? The dense technique makes not only for an impressive garment, but one that brilliantly stands up agains the elements.
If you’re new to cabling and curious to give it a try, know this; it’s really not as complicated as it looks! And we have some really wonderful patterns to help you get started.

Rather start off small? Our very own pattern, Mignon is the sweetest baby cardi you ever did see!
From the bookshelves we have even more goodies in the form of Cables Untangled, Aran Lace, and the many truly excellent Stitch Dictionaries we just couldn’t live without. Our favourites include the Up, Down, All-Around Stitch Dictionary, and the beautifully innovative Japanese stitch dictionaries which are all charted, so don’t worry about the language barrier.
Your best friend when tackling a cable knit project is the cable needle. Our rosewood needles from Bryson are simply a joy to work with, or try the cable needles and cable stitch holders from Clover.
When choosing your yarn for cabling, opt for something with a smooth spun for maximum stitch definition. Anything even slightly fuzzy will detract from your cables, and that’s just not fair on all that hard work.
Chickadee or Lark from Quince & Co, Woolstok from Blue Sky Fibres, and our new darling Arbor by Brooklyn Tweed are excellent examples of yarn that will make the absolute most out of a good cable.

Rosewood needles are terribly unethical – hardwood trees are endangered and illegal logging is a real problem.
Some claim to be from sustainable sources, but tracing provenance is impossible and no rosewood can be ethical if it encourages an appetite for more rosewood.
On the other hand – that book looks incredible
