Made of strong birch wood, (not driftwood, as the name suggests) the LYKKE needles are very smooth and light.

Birch is a hardwood whose durability is on par with maple and a little shy of Indian rosewood in terms of density and bending strength. It’s a good choice for knitting needles because it allows for tip integrity (no fraying or splintering) while also still yielding ever so slightly in your hands.

The name Driftwood comes from the greyed wood that colours each tool  individually.

Clara Parkes gives a good review of the needles here.

The needles in this kit have a quite pleasant middle-of-the-road tip that’s not pointy-pointy, nor is it dull or blunt. It is well-defined for precise stitchwork without being lethal or snaggy.  I was able to knit a variety of yarns by touch alone without any problems on knit and purl rows alike.

She also found the interchange smooth when tightened properly with the key.

All LYKKE needles have both US and metric sizes etched on the needles to ensure long-term readability.

Prize Giveaway

In anticipation of the Edinburgh Yarn Festival in mid-March, we are giving away prizes in the next few weeks leading up to the fair opening. Loop is so excited to be at the fair, but we are well aware that a lot of people will not be able to go, for whatever the reason. This is our way of giving you a little taste of Loop on the road at EYF18 – for all those who may not get a chance to go and want something a little special. Each prize will be a featured item on our stand, so if you don’t win, you know where to find it! The prizes are really fabulous and we’re really excited to do this and give you some treats.

This week we are giving away a set of the beautiful large LYKKE dpns (worth £118)!

Edinburgh Yarn Festival

We are getting really excited in the countdown to EYF 2018!  We will be at stand E5.

For those of you who can’t make it, we’ll preview some of the special things we’re taking, each week before then and offer a prize giveaway (see above!).Edinburgh Yarn Festival badge

Olga Jazzy Workshops

If you can’t make it to Edinburgh Yarn Festival, but want a taste of some of the fantastic workshops that will be offered there, we have Olga Buraya Kefelian (AKA Olga Jazzy) returning to Loop on Saturday March 10th! She will also be launching a new pattern with us that weekend.

Olga is a master at playing with textures, holes, and 3D shapes. She will be bringing some of her skills to Loop for two great workshops.

In the morning she will be teaching a workshop on Modular Knitting with Negative Space. Based on her new rectangular shawl pattern (launching at Loop!) featuring Daughter of a Shepherd fingering weight yarn.
In this class you will learn a technique for working and creating negative spaces modular style without breaking of the yarn or working intarsia.

We will have a special delivery of this yarn for class participants! Rachel, of Daughter of a Shepherd, is also supplying us with little mini skeins for you to have a play with in the class.

Olga at Loop London

In the afternoon Olga will teach a 3D shawl workshop based on her Kune-Kune shawl. She has knit this shawl with two strands of mYak Baby Yak Lace held together (It must be a soft dream to touch!)  You will learn not just how to make the shawl, but also how to adapt it and shape it to your liking.
