Pom Pom’s the Word!
Easy and fun to make, pompoms brighten up everyone’s day!
If you’re not sure where to start, this Pompom Project Kit has everything you need and makes such a lovely gift for a child, or anyone keen to make some pompoms!
The kit comes with a little project book, adorned with the cutest of illustrations by Australian artist Meredith Gaston. Inside are five ideas to make such as pompom mobiles, hair ties and cake decorations.
We of course had to have a go and have brightened up a corner of the shop with some pretty pompoms!
We’re also especially smitten by the beautiful ribbon tags on each ball of yarn which is KPC Glencoul DK, a merino cotton mix.
For some more ideas of what to make with your pompoms, new Decorating with Pompoms and Tassels gives the most stylish ideas. We really love the fresh and modern styling of this book, plus the host of 20 creative projects that ranges from cushions and fridge magnets to wall hangings and rugs.
And it’s not just wool! The book details the basic techniques for creating pompoms and tassels from materials including wool, paper, felt, upcycled fabric and leather.

Every pompom maker, and every knitter actually, needs a good pair of scissors for trimming. We love the quirky design of these rooster scissors and just had to have them for you! New for this summer, there are smaller ones for little snips or a larger pair for fabric.
And one final pompom but of a slightly different kind, it’s Pom Pom Quarterly magazine! The summer issue arrived this week and we’ve paired some of our favourite designs with some yarn suggestions and colours for summer knitting….
This jumper or tunic we can imagine in the Eden Cottage Yarns Bowland DK, light and elegant for the summer months, but still warm for those cloudy days.
Everyone needs a summer shawl and this crochet number has us reaching for the subtle shades of Madelinetosh Prairie (ooh, and it’s a one skein project!)
Another crochet number, a reworking of a classic stripy tee, we’d love to try in the ITO Serishin.
And lovely linen, courtesy of Quince & Co Sparrow, gives us the ideal yarn to create a floaty yet structured top, with a flattering handkerchief hem.
Everything is better with a pompom on top, so why not enter our giveaway to win a Rico Pompom Maker? Comment below letting us know what you’d add a pompom to and we’ll announce the winner next week on the blog. Make sure you comment before midnight GMT on Wednesday 25th May as entries after this date will not be counted.

I would make lots of little Pom poms to make jewellery for myself, for gifts and for my nieces, for them and for their dolls.
Well, when I was 11 and started ‘big school’ in Leeds I had to get up really early and it was cold so I crocheted myself some nose cosies. They were little circular things on elastic and I kept them in my duffle coat pocket in case it was really cold. It was quite a lacy design so that I could breathe! 40 years on I still have the last surviving one in a box somewhere. I looked daft as a brush anyway, so I think a pom pom on top would have finished it off nicely. Perhaps matching ear ones as well – why not?!
I love pom-poms! I made some large multi-coloured ones to hang on a tree in the back garden last winter to brighten things up.
