Seeing Knit By Numbers in a Whole New Way

There are a number of things to love about John Arbon Textiles Knit By Numbers: you’re almost guaranteed to find the exact colour you need in the range, it’s made in the bucolic southwest of England using vintage machinery, and British Bluefaced Leicester makes it lovely to wear. Now there’s even more to love, as Knit By Numbers 4ply arrives at Loop!

Everything about the way John Arbon Textiles approaches yarn making is lovely. The company was founded with a mission to keep traditional mill practices alive and to support the British wool industry (and environmental goals) by using locally sourced wool whenever possible. Over the years they’ve produced some wild and wonderful yarns, including their Yarnadelic range, with colour blends inspired by music from founder John Arbon’s extensive record collection. The company is now woman-owned and continues to produce some of the finest British yarn with an ethos you can really get behind.

We adore the DK base of KBN and we’re so excited to explore this fabulous yarn in a lighter weight. Knit By Numbers 4ply is available in the same range of colours as the DK base and uses the same half-and-half blend of Falklands Merino and Bluefaced Leicester. The signature difference of Knit By Numbers is its numerical palette. Each hue is assigned a number range, with each number denoting a different shade of that colour. As the numbers get higher, the shade gets lighter! This makes colour blending a breeze and also makes it easy to mix and match across colours.

So many of our favourite designers have already been knitting up a storm with Knit By Numbers 4ply. Aleks Byrd’s Risttee and Fabienne Gassmann’s Viburna are lovely sweaters that show off this yarn’s incredible texture. For the crocheters among you, the Loft shawl by Fay Dashper-Hughes is a lovely option. The Cuthbert Scarf by Francesca Hughes was published in John Arbon Textiles’s yearly magazine The Annual, so you know it must be good, and her Caper Tank really makes the most of the key feature of this yarn — its array of colours!
