Light and silky, we’re blown away by the stunning shades and feel of beautiful Shibui Silk Cloud. Blending 40% silk with high end mohair creates, as the name would suggest, a veritable cloud of the softest mohair.

Be sure to read to the end of the post to find out how you can win a skien in the colour of your choice!

Silk Cloud knits as a lace weight, creating gossamer light knits. Or why not experiment by holding it double with other yarn to create a halo of mohair fuzz?  The high silk content gives such a rich sheen and intense depth to each colour – we’re smitten with every one!

Loopette Fiona had the treat of trying the Silk Cloud when some of the first skeins arrived and whipped up a sample of Shibui’s free pattern Gradient cowl (available to download here on Ravelry) . Four colours are used for the small cowl (114 cm/45″ circumference). The pattern also knits to a larger size takes six skeins (182 cm/72″ circumference), so needs an extra two skeins of two shades.

And yes, they do look like little adorable balls of fluff when wound!

Before casting on, Shibui recommend winding each ball into three, and then three strands of Silk Cloud are held together, with one strand changing at regular intervals, making the shades shift and undulate through a soft fuzz of moss stitch.

Another fantastic knit we’d love to use Shibui for is Churchmouse Mohair Bias Loop. All you need is one skein for a easy to wear cowl that weighs next to nothing – perfect for travel knitting and then the ultimate accessory to pack while traveling!

Due to the lacey nature of Silk Cloud, we recommend using a lace tipped needle such as the Addi Lace or Chiagoo Red Lace. Depending on your preferred style of needle, some knitters might like to use wood or bamboo to give a little more traction against the silky yarn

Of course, the 30 colours of mohair have allowed us to indulge in our favourite pastime of dreaming up new combinations…

  1. Oh my giddy aunt! Too many luscious colours to choose from! I think Imperial would be the one I’d choose, but they’re all stunning! Hope I get my hands on a skein one day soon! Jo x

  2. This is one of those yarns where choosing a colour is just impossible because they’re all so utterly amazing. So Cove (but actually really all of them)…

  3. Oh this is very difficult
I would normally be drawin to yellows and green.
But I love fog , just beautiful !

  4. Beautiful.
I would choose Fog to make a wrap with – wrapping myself in a fuzzy soft hazy cloud of fog sounds strangely wonderful & otherworldly!

  5. Such a wonderful opportunity to cuddle someone close to your heart by knitting a shawl as a X.Mas gift.
    Can’t wait to try.

  6. Not sure I can choose only one color, but if I must.. Tar would be my favorite :) It’s sooo beautiful! So so pretty and dark and mysterious and perfect for a secret sweater. Or maybe like a fairytale featherweight cowl. Or maybe a dreamy hat. Tough decision..

  7. This yarn looks gorgeous. Can I only choose one colour – I’m a grey girl – fog, or Ash would be my choice. But I’ll choose Pollen, as my daughter would love it!

  8. So difficult to choose between all these lovely colours. But if really have to pick a colour, I am going for ‘fjord’. Hoping I will get lucky this time!

  9. So incredibly beautiful. Since forced to choose a favorite, I’ll say that the bias loop knit in Fog would be heavenly.

  10. All the shades are so wonderfully rich! But I would like something deep dark and passionate – Bordeaux has definitely caught my eye. Now that we’re close to winter I like to keep my wardrobe cosy with warm earthy shades and especially reds.

  11. Fjord is the perfect blue — so much depth of color just like the fjords of Norway. Love it. The whole palette is inspiring.

  12. What beautiful colors! I’d have to choose “pool” – such a dreamy color that will remind me of summer. Love the authentic names for the yarn – the names really evoke what the color looks like.

  13. I’ve knit with Silk Cloud before and it’s fabulous, but I’m VERY keen to try the new Brownstone. Love it!

  14. Caffeine 13 is my choice! I used Velvet 2017 in a sweater with two Habu Textiles yarns and Silk Cloud as a touch of softness.

  15. I love them all. But if I have to choos just one it will have to be VELVET, because not only it is my favourite colour the yarn looks as smooth as velvet.

  16. Ohhh! Such a beautiful yarn, I got breathless just scrolling down the colours and the stunning combinations in the gradient cowls. My favourite is velvet, but what a tough decision to make!

  17. Such lush, beautiful colors. This yarn feels so wonderful. I would choose Fjord to make a beaded cowl for my best friend.

  18. I had a chance to touch that yarn at a show. It’s so amazingly nice! I’d love a skein of Fog so I can start on the Orenburg style shawl.

  19. Oh what lovely yarn . I would love browstone to make a cockerpoo puppy for my sister in law . The colour is perfect .

  20. Imperial – such a rich shade, and so suitable for a Winter project! Would make creating a cowl such a pleasure

  21. I love the deep color of Grounds…yummy! Thanks for the opportunity to win–it would look great in the Halo Cowl!

  22. It’s a tough choice, but I would say that Velvet just pipped Ash and Bluprint. It has a truly astonishing depth of colour, like Malabrigo and I love purple; it’s my favourite colour. Light and lush, a terrific combination.

  23. If I had to choose, it’d have to be the Brownstone shade, because of its incredible luminosity that reminds me of fallen leaves in the sun..

  24. Clay looks like the perfect color to make a shawl or scarf. As a lace, it would be neither to bright nor to washed out.

  25. This yarn is stunning! A gorgeous richness of colour that retains a soft, natural appearance. My favourite is Clay!

  26. I love ‘Field’. A beautiful fuzzy colour that would lend itself to a number of ideas that are just waiting for the perfect yarn. Maybe a lovely snuggly cowl. Just right for frosty winter mornings.

  27. Oh lordy, this is pretty much impossible. I’d pick Velvet, but buying the remaining skeins for a gradient cowl would be a foregone conclusion if I won…

  28. Difficult, but it would have to be Raspberry for the winter and it would be a scarf or cowl so everyone would notice the beautiful colour and texture and hopefully make them smile.

  29. I agree with other posters: picking just one favourite is hard! I think today it’s Cascade; it almost seems to glow! I love the colour palette you chose in the post that has Cascade. I’d definitely have to make this project!

  30. Oh…. tricky question…. I think on balance, I choose suit as my favourite… (although I’ve changed my mind three times since starting to write this post!)

  31. Cascade would be my colour of choice. It reminds me of the cool waters of Iceland when we visited for my 50th birthday. The sky reflecting on the sea water, a perfect way to create a wearable item that reminded me of this special holiday.
