The Beauty of Organic Cotton at Loop

The Beauty of Organic Cotton at Loop

We’ve recently added a new cotton yarn to our collection of plant fibres at Loop and we’re very excited to tell you about it!

Krea Deluxe is a beautiful organic Danish cotton that is GOTS certified and produced in Europe. It is sown, grown, and harvested without the use of harmful pesticides, residues or artificial fertilisers, and other unnecessary chemicals. It is produced with respect and consideration for the environment, people, and animals. Every part of the process from the raw cotton harvest to spinning, winding, and dyeing are certified organic resulting in an incredibly soft and strong yarn.

We love the Krea deluxe colour palette with its unique and incredibly beautiful soft pastels evocative of natural dyes.  Loop stocks 47 colours of this lovely cotton!

Cotton is a fabulous alternative for those with wool allergies and for anyone living in warmer climates. It is extremely absorbent and makes a comfortable fabric that wicks moisture away from the body and feels nice against the skin. Not to mention, it’s also super easy to care for as it’s machine washable and will hold its shape.

We think it makes an excellent choice for baby and children’s garments, toys and shawls, jumpers, or home accessories due to its versatility, strength, and softness.

Speaking of Shawls…

We recently used the Krea Deluxe to knit this gorgeous shawl called Springflor designed by Nadia Crétin-Léchenne known as NCL knits. It’s a beauty and a great choice of shawl for a late summer’s evening. The pattern is originally written for wool so you have lots of choices when it comes to choosing yarns.

We used a 3.25mm needle to achieve the correct gauge and chose colour number 36,a dark forest green for the main colour and number 40, a lighter creamy-green for the contrast colour. The smooth cotton was a joy to knit with and is very soft and springy.

It took just 3 balls of a main colour and 3 balls of a contrast colour. It’s a versatile size and the floral lace motif is just stunning! Cotton creates a really crisp stitch definition that worked beautifully for the lacework in this design.

With a unique and beautiful tone on tone colour palette of 47 colours including the natural undyed ‘cotton raw,’ it’s easy to combine soft colour gradients and contrasting tones.

With so many beautiful colours to choose from it’s not hard to find something you’ll love so we’ve put together a few combinations we think would work really well.

The Krea Deluxe cotton is technically a sport weight yarn and comes in 50gram balls but can be knit as a fingering weight depending on the needle size you use.

Be aware that when you knit with cotton, you may need to go down a needle size or two to achieve the same gauge as a pattern written for wool as it does not have quite the same elasticity as wool.

If you’re looking for a nice cosy alternative to wool, give the Krea Deluxe a try. You won’t be disappointed. And did we mention – it won’t break the bank at just under £30 for all the yarn to make a gorgeous shawl that is machine washable!
