This is the tassel making method we’ve used in the Tiny Tassels shawl pattern. These tassels can be made bigger by using a wider piece of cardboard in place of the upper needle.
Tools and Materials
- two short 5mm needles
- darning needle
- length of yarn for tassel
- small scissors
Step 1: Hold the two knitting needles together, parallel to the edge. Bring darning needle with yarn through the top edge stitch, laying the tail over the top of the knitting.
Step 2: Wrap yarn around needles, holding the tail, with thumb so that it doesn’t pull through.
Step 3: Repeat process 10 times.
Step 4: Bring the tail upwards.
Step 5: Bring the darning needle through the centre of the the two knitting needles.
Step 6: Pass the darning needle down through the knitting needles and cinch the waist of the tassel.
Step 7: Bring the darning needle up through the cinched wrap.
Step 8: Repeat the wrap, cinch and needle through wrap a few times.
Step 9: Bring all the ends upwards. Pull out the bottom needle and tighten cinch further.
Step 10: Wrap again and bring the needle up through all the wraps.
Step 11: Remove second needle and trim the loops of tassel.
Step 12: Trim off tails.
