52 Weeks of Socks – a closer look and a giveaway!

52 Weeks of Socks – a closer look and a giveaway!

This week is the second part of our posts about the wonderful new book from Laine Publishing, 52 Weeks of Socks. We’re looking at more of the patterns this week, and we’re also showcasing our fab collection of sock yarns, and some bits of haberdashery too! We are also running a giveaway this week, both here on the blog and on Instagram, so be sure to keep reading to find out more.

Beautiful socks

We want to showcase some more of the beautiful patterns from 52 Weeks of Socks! We are suggesting good substitute sock yarns here, as some of the yarns that are used are ones we do not carry at Loop. We also did a little run-through of some of the sock patterns that use yarns we do stock in our post last week, so be sure to have a look at that too!

We have a great selection of sock yarns to suit different budgets; we stock both hand dyed sock yarn, and more basic machine dyed yarn, perfect for every day ‘workhorse’ socks.

There are so many beautiful sock yarns in the world and no one shop will have them all. We think we have a pretty terrific selection though. If we suggest a different yarn to the original one used in the book, it’s not because we don’t love that yarn – we just don’t have space for every one. We’re sure they are all beautiful. We’re making suggestions from the stock we have based on matching it as close to the fibre content and ply.

3 Leaves by Paula Pereira

3 Leaves use Julie Asselin Nomade; we suggest you try Madelinetosh Twist Light instead. The Twist Light would give really great stitch definition to the lovely lace and cable details on these socks.

vervain by sachiko burgin for laine publishing

Vervain by Sachiko Burgin

Vervain use Neighbourhood Fibre Co. Studio Sock, but we suggest La Bien Aimee Tough Sock as an alternative.

Lucerna by Fabienne Gassman

We especially love this sock pattern, as Fabienne is one of our Loopettes! Fabienne’s socks use John Arbon Exmouth Sock held together with ONION Knit Silk + Kid Mohair. We think they’d be lovely knitted up in La Bien Aimee Tough Sock held with Isager Silk Mohair.

Craspedia by Andrea Mowry

These fun socks use Retrosaria Mondim, but we suggest Life in the Long Grass Fine Sock as a substitute.

Boyland by Caitlin Hunter

Sure to be an interesting knit, these colour work socks use The Farmer’s Daughter Fibre Soka’pii base, but we would suggest substituting it with either Lang Jawoll, or the Woolly Mammoth sock mini bundle. If you choose Woolly Mammoth, you can pair it with a special skein of sock yarn from your stash!

casual lace by isabell kraemer for laine publishing

Casual Lace by Isabell Kraemer

These socks by Isabell Kraemer are one of the pairs in 52 Weeks of Socks that use a heavier weight of yarn – these are knitted up in Retrosaria Brusca, a light worsted weight. We suggest using Brooklyn Tweed Arbor as a substitute. The lace will knit up speedily in this weight of yarn, and will make a very pretty pair of socks to wear with boots.

Garcia by Erika Lopez A

Garcia are knitted in Greta and the Fibres Raval, but we think they’d be beautiful knitted in one of the lovely colours in Life in the Long Grass Fine Sock.

Erika by Anna Heumann

This pair are great for wearing with lace-up shoes or cropped trousers! The suggested yarn is The Fibre Co. Cumbria Fingering, but they would be fantastic knitted in The Uncommon Thread Tough Sock.

Loop also stocks a few self striping sock yarns, that are perfect for jazzing up a simple sock. We have the Kremke Soul Lazy Lion sock yarn, and the Schoppel Wolle Crazy Zauberball. Both come in 100g skeins, so you will be able to make a pair of socks with one! The Zauberball is shown here with our Lykke DPN set in the small size.

Haberdashery

Sock haberdashery at Loop London

Some of the sweet haberdashery we have at Loop is perfect for using when making socks. Shown here are the cute CocoKnits Precious Metal stitch markers, our ever-popular stainless steel Sock Blockers (these are available in 3 sizes), our Chiaogoo DPN sets (we have both bamboo and steel), and our Lykke DPN set in the small size. The socks are knitted up in Life in the Long Grass Fine Sock.

We also have plenty of stock of the Addi Crasy Trio needles; these are hybrid circular/DPN needles, and are absolutely perfect for people who love to work with DPNs.

  1. Oh how wonderful all these socks are, I love the plainer ones. Lucerna would be my first choice . Such a beautiful curation of patterns from seriously talented people.

  2. I do so love colour work, so I’d start with Caitlin’s Boyland…..or would I ?
    So much sock loveliness.

  3. I am smitten with 3 leaves, so it would be a huge goal to make a pair. I’m very much a beginner, but gorgeous socks are my dream, and why dream small?

  4. I think I would start with Garcia – the details look so beautiful. Really looking forward to seeing all of the patterns in the books!bx

  5. Such a difficult choice, but I think I’ll start with Lucerna, nice little short sock with a beautiful subtle design.

  6. Garcia – it would be my first pair of socks so I need something that is not too complex and not too long.

  7. It would have to be the Garcia – the stitch pattern at the top makes me think of gothic architecture and I love it!

  8. I’d knit Garcia first. I love that the pattern of the sick reminds me of the stone architecture you see in gothic cathedrals. So beautiful.

  9. Oh those Garcia ones are so pretty, Would love to knit them in a pastel colour to wear with white sneakers…

  10. Definitely ‘3 Leaves’ by Paula Pereira – I can think of nothing lovelier than mooching around at home with those on my feet… :)

  11. I’d start with Boyland by Caitlin Hunter as I’ve never knitted socks before, but I love colour work and fun socks!

  12. Erika for me. I cannot wait for my copy of the book to arrive. What could be better than 52 sock patterns! And thank you for suggesting yarn substitutes. More of that please as it is the one thing that perplexes me: I find a sock pattern I love and don’t have the yarn…

  13. Linea by Minna Sorvala is the pattern I want to start with nut it’s a very hard choice as they are all gorgeous.

  14. I would knit Garcia by Erika Lopez A
I love the detail at the top with the finer lines going down the leg and across the foot. They look very comfortable of most shoes/boots yet are still elegant.

  15. All designs are so beautiful! If I need to choose one to be the first, it would be 3 Leaves by Paula Pereira, these are simply gorgeous.

  16. They are all lovely but I think I would start with Casual Lace for some (almost) instant gratification in the heavier weight yarn.

  17. I love the look of the Garcia socks – they remind me of one called Tintern Abbey, which I will get round to trying one day, also! Currently I’m knitting some simple and satisfying Rye socks from Tin Can Knits.

  18. I’ve decided that Hollingbourne by Stone Knits is my starting point and I will probably use La La Bien Aimee Tough Sock as a substitute for te original La Bien Aimee Mondim

  19. So many beautiful I would love to knit out of the lovely book, 52 Weeks of Socks. I think I would start with the Dear Björn as I love the simplicity and the colour chosen by the designer. Thank you for the opportunity!

  20. So much exciting choice! I plan to begin with 3 Leaves, in Dr Zvivago Sky. Such a strong pattern deserves a string, almost tumultuous colourway!

  21. So many beautiful possibilities! Elve or Carapins first, it’s winter here :), then Suokatu or Hollingbourne.
Working through the entire book would be a wonderful thing!
    Thank you!

  22. So many beautiful possibilities! Elve or Carapins first, it’s winter here :), then Suokatu or Hollingbourne.
Working through the entire book would be a wonderful goal, they are all lovely.

  23. Craspedia first. Then Vervain. And after that Three Leaves. Then……
I could go on! The book looks amazing!

  24. I have been knitting socks for a while but never got beyond a vanilla! So I would give Erika a go and challenge myself.

  25. My first will be the Bembe sock knitted in La Bien Aimee Tough Sock in Rust, which arrived from Loop this week and awaits the book. So exciting!

  26. Ooh!!! I’m torn between Garcia and 3 leaves, both gorge!! I’ve only done plain or striped socks so far so a textureed pair would be soooo fun! Fingers crossed!

  27. Love all the patterns. My favourite one though has to be 3 Leaves by Paula Pereira! Can’t wait to knit one! :)

  28. This beautiful yarn would be perfect for a pair of Monkey Socks! I like the energy in this pattern – the perfect match for the colour exclusive to Loop, which reflects the vibrant city of London!

  29. Which pair of socks will I knit first? How does one pick from so many lovely designs? Both my daughters (19 and 16) like shorty socks for the summer, so if I have to pick one pattern I’ll go with Erika by Anna Heumann. But you can be guaranteed they won’t be the last pattern I knit from this book!!

  30. I’m brand new to Knitting, but an experienced Crocheter, I’m so excited to learn everything! I think I would try Erika by Anna Heumann! It’s probably too complicated for a beginner, but I’m jumping in with both feet!

  31. Oh, I don’t know which I want to do first! I did see a test knit of Garcia using a lovely pink yarn that made my heart skip a beat. Needless to say I’ll be making a pink pair.

  32. Definitely Garcia, as I love the detail at the top and the fine lines going down the sock. They look both simple and elegant.

  33. So many beautiful patterns and thank you so much for all the suggestions for yarn substitutes. I would start with
Craspedia by Andrea Mowry, I love her patterns. Thanks as always for all the inspiration!

  34. “Boyland” could be really eco-friendly and use up bits of the stash.
Or it could be a lovely excuse to be extravagant and buy a few new treats.
    Hmm…?

  35. Such a gorgeous book! I think the first pair I’d cast on would be Marceline Smith’s “Intersections”. I love cable-y socks!

  36. I looked at all of the patterns on Ravelry, but I instantly took to the very first sock… 3 Leaves by Paula Pereira!

  37. Lol, I keep changing the sock order in my queue. Right now Andrea Mowry’s Craspedia is at the top. But Candle Flame by Mona Schmidt may pass to the front very soon.

  38. They’re all extremely tempting! I’ve never knit any heavier weight socks, so I’ld like to try Isabel Kramer’s Casual lace.

  39. Thanks for such a great giveaway! This book might just get me knitting some socks. I started a pair, many months ago, and they are still waiting to be finished. My go-to knitting will always be garments. However, this book looks too good to pass up. Choosing from the patterns you’ve highlighted, I’d knit the 3 leaves design by Paula Pereira. I haven’t knit with The Uncommon Thread yarn yet, so I’m keeping everything crossed.

  40. I love the design’Vervain’ by Sachiko Burgin-so pretty. Loop’s blog is so informative and the give away would be lovely to cast on.

  41. I cant wait to cast on the Dear Björn socks. Maybe using the Sphaira colourway of the Life in the Long Grass Fine Sock

  42. 3 Leaves would be my choice of pattern. Beautiful. How I would love to knit enough socks to only ever wear handknitted. Bliss.

  43. I would have a really hard time deciding between Three Leaves and Vervain. I would probably have to knit both as they are so gorgeous.

  44. So many beautiful designs – 3 Leaves (Paula Pereira) would be my first cast-on, followed swiftly by Garia (Erika Lopez A) or Candle Flame (Mona Schmidt). And then the Elve slippers (Kajsa Vuorela Fredriksson) . It is such a stunning collection, I want to knit them all!

  45. I would start with Heartichoke but Tributary would follow closely behind. I rather like working my way through all the patterns and all the colors of The Uncommon Thread!

  46. I’ve just learned how to knit socks and I must say now I’m obsessed! I would start with the Garcia model. Tough call as all models are really beautiful!

  47. Turbillion is a lovely bespoke shade!
I love texture and would make Vervain as one of my first knits from 52 Weeks of Socks!
