Beautiful Neutrals

Beautiful Neutrals at Loop, London

This week at Loop, our lovely resident window dresser Sophie transformed Loop’s window with beautiful shades of cream, grey, white, brown and black with the help of an installation of textile artist Al Munro’s work. Al Munro is an Australian textile artist whose work revolves around the meanings and connections of textiles to broader concerns such as space, place and time. Her display in our window, Homage to the Everyday, “pays tribute to the beauty and significance of the everyday,” referencing “the time of the handmade, the repetition of daily routine echoed in the rows of stitches, and the soft contours giving quiet voice to the ebb and flow of the commonplace.” We found that to be a beautiful thought and at the same time were put in mind of the “everyday” neutral hues that make up so much of our world – and decided to devote this week’s blog post to those (extra)ordinary colours.

As Al’s artist’s statement says, “These objects and techniques speak of repeat encounters, quiet interactions, deep and complex relationships developed over time.” We think this phrase could apply to the lovely depth of hand-dyed neutral hues, like those of Skein (pictured top), Wollmeise, or The Uncommon Thread yarns (below).

Wollmeise yarns are well known for their bright and variegated colourways, but we love the depth of these neutrals too.

And we love the beautiful simplicity of these naturally dyed colours from Artisan Yarns on linen.Beautiful Neutrals at Loop, London

Lucky for us knitters, sheep come ready made in unending natural shades of cream, brown and black. Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift has so many lovely variations of neutrals.

As does the heavier, marled Jarol Pure British Aran yarn.

We’ve also taken inspiration from the latest Rowan Studio magazine, which this issue focusses on monochrome as interpreted by recent knitwear design graduates.

And as always, we adore these sophisticated baby toy lions by Miga de Pan.

Keep in mind the stunning Skein Merino/Silk Sport is now on sale at Loop for £18.99 (was £26.00) and the pattern for the Contrast sweater pictured above will be available for free with purchase of The Uncommon Thread BFL DK exclusively at the Loop stand at the Knitting & Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace in October!

Speaking of which, we’re so pleased to announce the winners of last week’s giveaway! Genny, Eva and Pearl have each won a ticket to the Knitting & Stitching Show – we can’t wait to see you there!

Al Munro’s crochet works will be on display in the Loop window at 15 Camden Passage, London N1 8EA until the end of September.
