Loop’s Anniversary Plans – with Kristin Perers

We’ve loved bringing you the stories behind the yarns and the patterns that have come together to make our anniversary book Loop’s 10. As the release date is on the horizon (early September!) we have a few interviews with key creatives who brought it all together. This week, we chat with Kristin Perers, who is responsible for the gorgeous photography of Loop’s 10.

The custom colours are starting to arrive! Find out how you can win a skein of Dye for Yarn’s Golden Beehive at the end of the post! (Competition now closed – but we’ll have lots more in the future so stayed tuned!)

Kristin has been a designer, a painter and a stylist, all things which play a part in her role as photographer. She has been a huge part of our other publications, photographing Vintage Crochet, Juju’s Loops and many of the Loop single patterns.

Images are incredibly important to Susan, and she finds working with Kristin a perfect creative partnership – “we ‘get’ each other both visually and the mood we are trying to evoke, it’s so easy… Or, even if it is hard, to capture what we are trying to do we are both trying to make it happen in the same direction and bouncing ideas around with each other. After years in publishing before opening Loop, I know this is a rare thing and a relationship to cherish having worked on so many shoots together”

Susan also adds, “I have huge respect for Kristin – even after I think we have ‘got the shot’ – she sometimes will say ‘hold on a minute’ and move a twig or the way the strand of yarn is draping a tiny bit and it is even better. There is such integrity in her work…  it is always the greatest fun prepping to style shoots as I know she will get just as excited about finding the perfect ribbon, branch or old book as I am.

It’s such an exciting part of a project to capture the final aspect of putting out a pattern or a book when shooting the images. It is the culmination of everything for me; the ideas behind choosing the designer, the yarn, the project – all the inspiration and work. You take those shots and it is what goes out there into the world –  it’s what gets translated to others to, hopefully, inspire them”

We asked Kristin to tell us more …

It’s strange but Susan and I knew each other before we knew we knew each other. If you can follow that. Both Americans in London, both in Islington and working together on Susan first book. I was thrilled to be asked to photograph it and soon we discovered we had both studied in New York City at the same college at the same time. It felt good to meet a kindred spirit, we shared our particular experience of being expats, memories of NYC in the 1980s and adjusting to life in London raising children.

Susan has a strong natural style and working with her our visions blended seamlessly. She has an instinctive eye for colour play and layering – she would often see things lying around and use them as props in an inventive way. I love working with Susan as I know I’ll get beautiful pictures and ones that feel close to my heart if not an extension of my heart.

Exclusive Colourways for Loop. Loop
Exclusive Colourways for Loop. Loop

Photographing knit patterns you have to be at once practical and descriptive of the detail, texture, stitch, shape yet also there needs to be a romance about it. A picture that will spark the imagination and take someone from ‘nice’ to ‘oh I want to make that!’. That is the challenge and also the fun – going from the big moody picture to the detail, telling a little story that the reader can enter into.

I knit but am by no means an expert so am often looking for something simple and easy to keep my hands busy. This book in particular has me inspired by the beautiful yarns! The hand dyed colour variations are just divine and I have picked up my needles starting on Pam Allen’s simple cardigan Silene.

Loop is more than just a yarn shop. It is a place of social exchange, a hub and also a source of inspiration if you are a crafter or an artist. I often recommend my friends to go there just to look at the colours – it’s a great place to lift the spirits.

Thanks Kristin!

You can find out more about Kristin’s work on her website, and also her project This is 50, where she explores reaching this landmark through portraits of other women.

Many of you may have noticed the pattern previews for Loop’s 10 on Ravelry, where you can see Kristin’s photography and all the final details of our Anniversary collection. We’re certainly getting excited and adding these patterns to our Ravelry queues and favourites!

We’re still taking pre-orders for Loop’s 10 – remember you have until 1st September to order and receive 10% off the price of the book.  Place your order here, and please note, if you do order other items in the same transaction the entire order will be held at the shop and only dispatched when the book is available. If you wish to receive your other items sooner, please place two separate orders.

We just had a delivery of Dye for Yarn’s Golden Beehive, and The Uncommon Thread Turbillion should be arriving any moment now – all this excitement means that we’re having another giveaway! (Competition now closed – but we’ll have lots more in the future so stayed tuned!)

One final thing is to announce the winner of last week’s giveaway. This time it was one skein of the gorgeous custom colour from Old Maiden Aunt ‘The Angel Islington’, the yarn used by Ysolda Teague for her ‘Isokon’ fingerless mitts… and the winner is Mrs Robinson who says “Beautiful! I love Bitter Bug”. Congratulations! We’ll be in touch to let you know how you can claim your prize.

If I was to be the very lucky winner I would indeed be halfway there.

Going with Golden Beehive as my favourite :-)

  8. Beautiful yarn. I’ve always loved Dye for Yarn’s colour names. If I was picking for me, then I would pick Withering Crocus, but Golden Beehive would be perfect for my best friend.

  9. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- Dye for’s Golden Beehive is THE most perfect colour yarn ever! I’ve just knitted my first shawl and can’t wait to see the beautifully-shot dreamy projects in this book. I’m ready for my next challenge!

  10. Unusual and occassionally disturbing range of names – I’m usually drawn to greys but do like rotten berry tart.

  11. My favourite right now is probably Tarzan’s Very Bad Day. And aren’t the names just as great as the colours? :D

  12. I have a skein of the old raspberry icecream and started to make a search for a shawl. It’s got this delicate vintage feel to it I can’t get enough of. Both the colour and the yarn itself are absolutely stunning. Thrilled to have found this yarn.

  13. Trapped in the Underworld would be my choice, although it’s hard to choose from so many stunning colours (with such fab names!).

  14. I love them all! I particularly like fading Chinese anenome and fading stormy night but I would say Golden Beehive is my absolutele fave!

  15. They are beautiful and the names so intriguingly powerful too. Today I would choose Ghosts Fading Under a Cold Moon. Ask me another day and I’m sure I’d choose a different shade to match a different mood.

  16. Too hard to choose between “Lichen on a tombstone” and “Red rose losing it’s fire”… Lichen is so great, it has to be the one!
ps: lovely yarns with great names

  17. I love the molten nougat truffles such a “warm” neutral & would be perfect for another shawl – looking forward to the new book arriving, eeek#

  18. The colours and names are fantastic!
Golden Beehive is gorgeous, but I think Burnt Cinnamon Roll is my favourite (although it reminds me of a few culinary catastrophes!).
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  19. Dye for Yarns colours are so rich, I’ve been knitting Celestarium in ‘curse of the late hour’ and its just the most dreamy night sky blue, I love it – and how fab it would look against this golden behive!

  20. My favourite colour is Too Much Mint Cocktail, so delicate, and as that’s how you feel after too many mojitos, very descriptive!

  21. All colors are fantastic and the names are great, but my favorite is Red Rose Losing it’s Fire. Such a rich color, I already know what to make of it for this fall/winter.

  22. So many beautiful colours and the names are so inventive – I would love to knit socks in Ghosts Fading under Cold Moon.

  23. my favourite shade would have to be “Red rose losing its’ fire” absolutely gorgeous and the name perfectly describes the colour.

  24. I love Golden Beehive – memories of a hot Summer !
But I also love the idea of a lacey shawl knit with ‘molten nougat truffles’ and ‘ghosts fading under cold moon’ – these colours suit me better .
    Dye-for-yarn’s titles are so evocative.

  25. I am in love with this yarn, my favourite is ‘Lichen on a Tombstone’ such a beautiful colour with many variations in it. I can see this knitting up beautifully for a cardigan or sweater in the Loop 10 book x

  26. Oh my Gosh, I just love this new issue. I have your first book and can hardly wait for the second. It is fabulous. Dye for Yarn’s colorways are so gorgeous. I would be happy with any of them. I really seemed to be drawn to Last Dance is Over. Thanks!

  27. I love them all!!! But Lichen on Tombstone and Antique Doll ‘spoke’ to me straight away. The Golden Beehive is a wonderful colour but I already have a yellow autumn project on the go. I want to try different colours now. Happy knitting everyone – I can’t wait for your lovely Loop’s 10 book to arrive!!!

  28. so so many….but i’d have to go with golden beehive, loops ‘signature’ color!! (plus….i just have an affinity for anything ‘bee’ related—even a color!)

  29. OMG! So many beautiful colors with fantastic names.. choosing is so difficult!
Dyeing rose is probably my fave, anyway. Thank you for the chance given,
As soon as possible I have to pay a visit in Islinghton!

  30. Too Much Mint Cocktail — what a story that might tell! All the names are a hoot, which adds to the joy. Thanks!

  31. These yarns have all got such fantastic names! I am almost tempted to choose on name alone – but my favorite colour has to be Withering Crocus. And it looks like I am not alone since that one is currently out of stock! Am off to Ravelry to see what else people have been knitting with it!

  32. Dark Dolphin on the Beach. All though, here in Rhode Island, USA,
it is more likely to be a small shark lying on the beach. Never-the-
less, the shadows in this colourway speak to me.

  33. “Bat biting the dust does it for me” – fantastic name conjures up knitting by the fireside on a dark autumn evening.

  34. Love the evocative yarn color names and the colors themselves. I’d choose Lichen on a Tombstone; I keep going back to it. Can’t wait to see that color, Golden Beehive and Bat in a Dark Mood when I visit Loop late August.

  35. Dyeing Rose. Although it is dyeing not dying, I would love the opportunity to bring it to life. Any article in this colour would have wow factor

  36. Faded stormy night…inspired by our current weather! You are so generous with these giveaways and can’t wait for Loop’s 10 …….Tif’s and Ysolda’s mittens will be first on my list to beautifully adorn my hands while I play piano during the winter!

  37. I’m going through a yellow/mustard phase at the moment so Golden Beehive is definitely on my list!! Can’t wait to get the book!! Great work as always!! Happy anniversary…looking forward to the next ten years x

  38. Gorgeous colours, fantastic names, I think I’d go for Bouquet of Dark roses – but they’re all wonderful!

  39. wow, exquisite yarn and great names! very hard to choose, but this one is wonderful: Giant Clam Closed Forever

  40. Mud on My Wall for its subtlety & simplicity, and how well it would coordinate with others. Fir Trees Falling to Dust and Queen Mab’s Visit are also “my” colours.

  41. C’est juste trop trop trop beau ! J’attends mon Loop 10 avec impatience et j’ai hâte de commencer à tricoter avec toutes ces belles laines et ces belles couleurs ! Just beautiful !

  42. I’m so excited about the anniversary book and all of the new bespoke colours. My favourite colour is Antique Doll. It’s so rich. Thanks for the giveaways.

  43. All the colours are beautiful and the names delicious so it’s difficult to choose one favourite. However I’m going through a denim-ish phase at the moment so choose Fading Stormy Night, which is also evocative of the view from my caravan (not too often fortunately).

  44. I actually like Golden Beehive so much that everyday I’ve taken a peek before I leave for work and a couple of times when I get home. I would love to make another shawl from Juju’s Loops book with Golden Beehive – yummmmm!

  45. I have to pick “smashed blackberries” as I have been out in the garden picking (and eating) blackberries!

  46. I love Kristin’s photos and would love to make a Golden Beehive “beenie” for my beekeeper friend KarelXX

  47. ‘Red rose losing its’ fire’ is my favourite, I love all the colours and the names describe them so accurately.

  48. Red Rose Losing Its Fire is totally gorgeous – I don’t usually work with such bold colours, but that’s a beauty! Looking forward to seeing all the bespoke colours together soon :D

  49. I love the brightness of red rose losing its fire. Although mostly I love all the names given to the lush colours
