Loop’s Anniversary Plans – with Kristin Perers
We’ve loved bringing you the stories behind the yarns and the patterns that have come together to make our anniversary book Loop’s 10. As the release date is on the horizon (early September!) we have a few interviews with key creatives who brought it all together. This week, we chat with Kristin Perers, who is responsible for the gorgeous photography of Loop’s 10.

Kristin has been a designer, a painter and a stylist, all things which play a part in her role as photographer. She has been a huge part of our other publications, photographing Vintage Crochet, Juju’s Loops and many of the Loop single patterns.
Images are incredibly important to Susan, and she finds working with Kristin a perfect creative partnership – “we ‘get’ each other both visually and the mood we are trying to evoke, it’s so easy… Or, even if it is hard, to capture what we are trying to do we are both trying to make it happen in the same direction and bouncing ideas around with each other. After years in publishing before opening Loop, I know this is a rare thing and a relationship to cherish having worked on so many shoots together”
Susan also adds, “I have huge respect for Kristin – even after I think we have ‘got the shot’ – she sometimes will say ‘hold on a minute’ and move a twig or the way the strand of yarn is draping a tiny bit and it is even better. There is such integrity in her work… it is always the greatest fun prepping to style shoots as I know she will get just as excited about finding the perfect ribbon, branch or old book as I am.
It’s such an exciting part of a project to capture the final aspect of putting out a pattern or a book when shooting the images. It is the culmination of everything for me; the ideas behind choosing the designer, the yarn, the project – all the inspiration and work. You take those shots and it is what goes out there into the world – it’s what gets translated to others to, hopefully, inspire them”
We asked Kristin to tell us more …
It’s strange but Susan and I knew each other before we knew we knew each other. If you can follow that. Both Americans in London, both in Islington and working together on Susan first book. I was thrilled to be asked to photograph it and soon we discovered we had both studied in New York City at the same college at the same time. It felt good to meet a kindred spirit, we shared our particular experience of being expats, memories of NYC in the 1980s and adjusting to life in London raising children.
Susan has a strong natural style and working with her our visions blended seamlessly. She has an instinctive eye for colour play and layering – she would often see things lying around and use them as props in an inventive way. I love working with Susan as I know I’ll get beautiful pictures and ones that feel close to my heart if not an extension of my heart.
Photographing knit patterns you have to be at once practical and descriptive of the detail, texture, stitch, shape yet also there needs to be a romance about it. A picture that will spark the imagination and take someone from ‘nice’ to ‘oh I want to make that!’. That is the challenge and also the fun – going from the big moody picture to the detail, telling a little story that the reader can enter into.
I knit but am by no means an expert so am often looking for something simple and easy to keep my hands busy. This book in particular has me inspired by the beautiful yarns! The hand dyed colour variations are just divine and I have picked up my needles starting on Pam Allen’s simple cardigan Silene.
Loop is more than just a yarn shop. It is a place of social exchange, a hub and also a source of inspiration if you are a crafter or an artist. I often recommend my friends to go there just to look at the colours – it’s a great place to lift the spirits.

Beautiful yarn. I’ve always loved Dye for Yarn’s colour names. If I was picking for me, then I would pick Withering Crocus, but Golden Beehive would be perfect for my best friend.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- Dye for’s Golden Beehive is THE most perfect colour yarn ever! I’ve just knitted my first shawl and can’t wait to see the beautifully-shot dreamy projects in this book. I’m ready for my next challenge!

I have a skein of the old raspberry icecream and started to make a search for a shawl. It’s got this delicate vintage feel to it I can’t get enough of. Both the colour and the yarn itself are absolutely stunning. Thrilled to have found this yarn.
The one that stands out for me at the moment is Ghosts Fading Under Cold Moon

Dye for Yarns colours are so rich, I’ve been knitting Celestarium in ‘curse of the late hour’ and its just the most dreamy night sky blue, I love it – and how fab it would look against this golden behive!

it is more likely to be a small shark lying on the beach. Never-the-

All the colours are lovely, but Dry Steppe would go perfectly with my fall wardrobe.
All the colours are beautiful and the names delicious so it’s difficult to choose one favourite. However I’m going through a denim-ish phase at the moment so choose Fading Stormy Night, which is also evocative of the view from my caravan (not too often fortunately).
I actually like Golden Beehive so much that everyday I’ve taken a peek before I leave for work and a couple of times when I get home. I would love to make another shawl from Juju’s Loops book with Golden Beehive – yummmmm!
