mYak Baby Yak And Silk Yarn
mYak Yarn has arrived at Loop and we’re thrilled! We are the exclusive UK stockists of this incredible range of yarns.
This range of subtle, luxurious, elegant yarns comes in a beautiful colour palette. Made of all natural fibres, not only is the yarn beautiful, but it’s ethically sourced and gathered. Paola, the owner behind mYak, spent many years living and working on the Tibetan Plateau and works directly with the yak herders.
The herders hand comb the underbelly of the yak and cashmere goats to gather the fibre, with no harm to the animals. The link between the animal and the tribe is ancient. The shepherds use every part of the yak: milk (to make butter and yogurt), meat, flesh, dung (used as fuel), horns (used as a container for milking) and of course fleece.
The most important part of the yak is the under-fleece, which is thick, short and soft. It’s a natural insulating material for the animal. It sheds from May onwards and is collected by the shepherds. mYak is the first brand to use baby yak fibre, directly bought (at the highest market price) from nomadic communities of the north-east Tibetan upland.
They only use the under-fleece of two-year-old calves, carefully selected and combed in order to collect the fibre before it spontaneously falls.
This week we feature the baby yak/silk, a perfect Summery yarn, made of silk and baby yak.
This stunning fingering weight yarn is wonderfully soft and creates a beautiful drapey fabric when knitted or crocheted.
For a limited time, we have a few sampler kits, containing 8 full size skeins (for the price of 7!), of all the colours listed above. It is the perfect way to try the different colours for either a pattern with colour work, or the beautiful Kate Davies, Betty Moat Cowl. This gorgeous, luxurious cowl is the perfect accessory. A sample kit includes enough yarn to knit the larger double wrap version.
We have a full range of mYak yarns, including a small amount of our limited edition hand-dyed, with natural dyes, cashmere lace, as well as all of the colours of the mYak baby yak/silk in stock.
Another fabulous accessory to try is this simple but elegant shawl by Justyna Lorkowska, Onda D’Amore. Literally translated, from Italian, it mean “waves of love”. You will love working with the combination of the mYak baby yak/silk and this pattern. Knit in garter stitch stripes with an eyelet, lacey border, this design was created in collaboration with mYak.
Beautifully feminine and elegant. A joy to knit with this stunning yarn.
We also have a beautiful sample of the Cladonia Shawl by Through the Loops knit up in mYak baby yak/silk.
In fact, any of Kristen Kapur’s wonderful shawl patterns would look lovely in the mYak baby yak/silk yarn.
This yarn really needs to be touched to fully appreciate it. Pop into the shop to see our samples and stroke our skeins!
Wow, that looks amazing. I bet it feels even more amazing.
I love getting your weekly emails. I live in San Francisco so can’t “pop in” to the shop. think I’ll have to make a special trip to London!
BTW Do you have crochet patterns? I would buy some of the yak/silk in a jack flash but I’m not a knitter, alas.
Yes, we have many crochet patterns. Look at our online shop or look on Ravelry.
Such beautiful yarn and shawls!
Gorgeous! I wish I was close enough to visit!
It’s really too beautiful–so, so tempting! I have already succumbed and ordered a few skeins for another shawl, and were it not for overseas shipping, would be ordering these beautiful eight skeins too! Really lovely things here. <3
