mYak Baby Yak + Silk – the perfect summer yarn

Spring is in the air, and with summer just around the corner, our thoughts are turning to lightweight knits, perfect for Spring and Summer.

Loop has been the proud stockist of mYak yarns for several years, and we want to showcase this gorgeous yarn this week. mYak’s fibres are ethically sourced directly from Tibetan herders, and are collected by hand combing the undercoats of baby yaks and cashmere goats.

Yak wool is warmer than lambswool, is very strong, and is just as fine as cashmere. This is very special yarn!

Our favourite yarn for spring and summer from mYak is the Baby Yak +Silk base. It’s a light fingering weight made up of 50% baby yak and 50% silk.

The yarn has a stunning ‘heathered’ look with a lovely subtle colour palette. Once knitted, it produces a soft and slinky fabric with beautiful drape and shine. It has enough body to hold a lace pattern or a textured stitch pattern beautifully.

There are so many wonderful patterns you could use this yarn for, but we’ve picked out some favourites here to inspire you, with the help of Paola from mYak.

Onda D’amore by Justyna Lorkowska is a great shawl for several different colours, and was designed especially for the Baby Yak + Silk yarn.

The beautiful eyelet ‘waves’ work perfectly in this yarn!

BMC, or Betty Mouat Cowl, by Kate Davies is a Loop favourite pattern. With the beautiful mYak colour palette, it’s so much fun to pick colours for this cowl with the gorgeous traditional Shetland cockleshell pattern.

Our sample was knitted in the largest size.

The Sojourner Shawl by Xandy Peters combines brioche and lacework – what a lovely squishy fabric! The pattern for this shawl is in Pom Pom magazine issue 27, from Winter 2018.

Cladonia by Kirsten Kapur is another Loop favourite. This little shawl has plenty to keep you interested – stripes, lace and an oversized picot edging.

Reagan by Isabell Kraemer is a lovely lightweight cardigan with lots of lace detailing. This would be perfect worn over a summer dress.

The Sunset in Autumn shawl by Knitting For Breakfast is a great pattern for the mYak Baby Yak + Silk, which is the yarn the pattern calls for. You don’t need very much, but the finished item is very beautiful.

The gorgeous autumnal tones used in the pattern sit perfectly together, but you could make a summery version in shades of green or pink.

Lastly, the Open Waters shawl by Melanie Berg is a great pattern for the mYak. It has lots of interesting and graphic lacework to knit up which is balanced out with soothing garter stitch.
