On Our Needles – The Shift cowl

On Our Needles – The Shift cowl

This week we’re bringing you a new post in our ‘On Our Needles’ series! We’re always busy at Loop with our own personal knitting projects, and recently lots of us have made versions of The Shift cowl by Andrea Mowry. We wanted to share some of our projects and the yarns we used, as we mixed and matched quite a lot from the original pattern.

The original version of The Shift cowl used three different skeins of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool. The yarn is labelled as a sport weight, but knits up to both a sport weight and 4ply/fingering gauge, depending on the needles you use. The Shift cowl uses a 4ply/fingering gauge, and 3.75mm needles.

Susan

Susan, who is the owner of Loop, made a lovely Shift cowl in shades of pink, purple and cream with lots of mixing of different yarns. She used Walk Collection Merino Sport in Blush, Quince & Co. Chickadee Organic Heathers in Skyline, Quince & Co. Finch in Canvas and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool in Cold Comfort.

Carole

Carole is our weekday manager, and we’ve previously featured her brightly coloured knits in our ‘On Our Needles’ feature. For her Shift cowl, Carole used two shades of Dyed in the Wool, Robin’s Egg and Stay Ready, and then a skein of Koigu KPPPM in colour P508.

Carole is also wearing her recently finished Winterberry vest from Knits About Winter, in Viola Organic Merino DK – isn’t it beautiful!

Lucy

Lucy made her Shift cowl from three different colours of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool – the original colours that Andrea Mowry used for her sample. Lucy bought a kit and made her version before she became a Loopette, so sadly we don’t have the exact colours she used, but we do have lots of lovely shades of greeny blues.

Monica

Monica, one of our wonderful American Loopettes recently finished her ‘autumnal’ Shift cowl, and has now cast one on in lovely bright shades for spring! Monica used Zauberball for her autumnal cowl, and added a pinky red yarn from her stash. For her second one, she’s using two different shades of Zauberball, and will add a zingy pink from her stash.

Zauberball is a fantastic substitute for the Spincycle; it has plenty of yardage and is great for being cost effective.

Monica is also wearing her latest pair of Salad Wristies by Alex Tinsley, knitted in Eden Cottage Milburn DK and Isager Silk Mohair.

Juliet

Juliet is our admin queen, and now works from home for Loop. She made her Shift in three different colours of the Dyed in the Wool; Rusted Rainbow, Mississippi Marsala and Shades of Earth.

She is wearing her newly finished Twigs jumper by Junko Okamoto, which was knitted in Biches & Buches Le Petit Lambswool, and is wonderfully soft!

On Our Needles The Shift cowl

We hope this has given you lots of inspiration for your own versions of The Shift – it’s such a great pattern for using up leftover yarn, either hand dyed or solid colours.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this! Seeing the skeins next to the projects really helped to see how they worked up as well as seeing the projects all together in one picture shows the diversity of the design- from a multitude of color to the subtle classic of shades of one color. Although Lucy’s was a kit, I’m sure there’s a close match in Loop’s inventory!
Looking forward to more of these!

  2. I absolutely adore this post! It’s so great to see the projects behind the scenes, “meet new people,” and get a lot of great ideas!

  3. Lovey Ladies, lovely shawlettes and really lovely colors. What’s not to like… If I ever come to London I will definately visit Loop.
Will “The Shift” come as a kit in The future ?
    All the best from Denmark

  4. What a lovely post! I received some of the Spincycle yarn for my own Shift at Christmas, and was given great colour advice from Bronte when I emailed Loop in a quandry about which colourways to go for. I’m really enjoying working on it and am already plotting another as a gift, using some stash yarn. Great to see multiple versions of one pattern. Thank you!

  5. It’s great to see the people who run Loop – thanks for this interesting blog. Also a huge thank you for making your giveaways etc accessible to those of us who choose not to use Facebook or Instagram.

  6. I did a Shift cowl last summer, in a beautiful old variegated skein in cotton and silk. (Maybe a malabrigio? I truly don’t know) and 2 colors of Pima cotton. I love it and wear it all the time.

  7. Hallo, ich suche eine Anleitung in Deutsch für so ein Tuch. Ich suche bereits seit zwei Jahren.
    Viele Grüße
    Andrea

    • Hi Andrea,

It looks like this pattern is only available in English, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Sorry!
