On Our Needles – The Shift cowl
This week we’re bringing you a new post in our ‘On Our Needles’ series! We’re always busy at Loop with our own personal knitting projects, and recently lots of us have made versions of The Shift cowl by Andrea Mowry. We wanted to share some of our projects and the yarns we used, as we mixed and matched quite a lot from the original pattern.
The original version of The Shift cowl used three different skeins of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool. The yarn is labelled as a sport weight, but knits up to both a sport weight and 4ply/fingering gauge, depending on the needles you use. The Shift cowl uses a 4ply/fingering gauge, and 3.75mm needles.
Susan, who is the owner of Loop, made a lovely Shift cowl in shades of pink, purple and cream with lots of mixing of different yarns. She used Walk Collection Merino Sport in Blush, Quince & Co. Chickadee Organic Heathers in Skyline, Quince & Co. Finch in Canvas and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool in Cold Comfort.
Carole is our weekday manager, and we’ve previously featured her brightly coloured knits in our ‘On Our Needles’ feature. For her Shift cowl, Carole used two shades of Dyed in the Wool, Robin’s Egg and Stay Ready, and then a skein of Koigu KPPPM in colour P508.
Carole is also wearing her recently finished Winterberry vest from Knits About Winter, in Viola Organic Merino DK – isn’t it beautiful!
Lucy made her Shift cowl from three different colours of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool – the original colours that Andrea Mowry used for her sample. Lucy bought a kit and made her version before she became a Loopette, so sadly we don’t have the exact colours she used, but we do have lots of lovely shades of greeny blues.
Monica, one of our wonderful American Loopettes recently finished her ‘autumnal’ Shift cowl, and has now cast one on in lovely bright shades for spring! Monica used Zauberball for her autumnal cowl, and added a pinky red yarn from her stash. For her second one, she’s using two different shades of Zauberball, and will add a zingy pink from her stash.
Zauberball is a fantastic substitute for the Spincycle; it has plenty of yardage and is great for being cost effective.
Juliet is our admin queen, and now works from home for Loop. She made her Shift in three different colours of the Dyed in the Wool; Rusted Rainbow, Mississippi Marsala and Shades of Earth.
We hope this has given you lots of inspiration for your own versions of The Shift – it’s such a great pattern for using up leftover yarn, either hand dyed or solid colours.
