Properly Practised Knitting
The gift-knitting rush is over, and we’re back to the daily grind. It’s cold outside and we could use a little comfort. Sometimes, for knitters, comfort comes in the form of a gorgeously plush skein of thick-and-thin hand-dyed yarn. We can’t think of a better way to stave off the January blues than by working up a simple but beautiful, enormous, cosy scarf in one of the dreamy colourways of Colinette Point Five. In semi-solid or gently variegated hues, each stitch is a new colour experience, making the simplest garter stitch pattern an adventure.
That was exactly Sophie’s thought when she designed our January window at the shop, which she filled with calming shades of blue and grey – and a beautiful, in-progress Colinette Point Five scarf in the colour Bright Charcoal. As you can see, it still needs casting off, but it’s a fully formed, giant cosy scarf which took only 3 skeins of Point Five, with a little to spare.
While simple enough for the novice knitter, we think that even the most advanced knitters can sometimes benefit from a flow of big, easy stitches. We took a cue from one of our knitting heroines, Elizabeth Zimmermann, on that one:
And isn’t she right? Luckily, it’s not hard to make a simple garter stitch scarf “properly practised”. All you need to do is cast on 20 sts on 15 mm needles, and knit across the row on every row until you’re out of yarn. Easy as that. The hardest part will be choosing the colour that soothes your spirit most…
Pale and dreamy?
Rich and jewel-toned?
Bright and happy?
Whatever you choose, it’ll be a joy to knit on a winter’s night, and comforting to wear on grey day. A little bright spot in the cold and dreary season.
