Cooler days and nights drawing in have us reaching for cosy wools and comforting knits. What better time then to introduce you to our latest Loop pattern, Sous Sous.  Elegant, easy to wear and knit using the gorgeous Madelinetosh DK, we think it will become a staple part of your handknit winter wardrobe.

We first fell in love with Norah’s structural designs and innovative constructions when we became the first yarn shop in Europe to stock Berroco yarns. We are proud to have championed her pattern booklets  and now, after her nine years as creative director at Berroco, we are truly honoured that Loop can bring you her first independent design Sous Sous. We hope you are as excited as we are!

(Make sure to read to the end of the post to find out how you can win a copy of our new pattern! )
This competition is now closed, but we will have lots more giveaways soon!

Designed for Loop by the talented Norah GaughanSous Sous is loose fitting cropped sweater with beautiful textured details. The name originates from a ballet term that literally translates as ‘under over’, referencing the graceful twining of the cables on the front and back.

Norah Gaughan told us that she was inspired by her love of cosy sweaters that are so wide that you are not sure that it’s a poncho or a pullover…

“It’s so comfortable and the size does not have to be fussy. The short, narrow sleeves keep the sweater from being overwhelming. That’s one of my favorite tricks! The shaped front was influenced by fashion…I love this…not only does it look cool, the added shape at the hem keeps the piece from looking wide and monolithic.”

Sous Sous uses Madelinetosh Merino DK, a sumptuous pure superwash merino. The single-ply nature of this yarn means an almost silk like lustre and allows the rich depth of the hand dyed colours to shine. Norah admitted that when it came to knitting the final sample, she couldn’t bring herself to hand it over to one of her test knitters –

“I wanted to keep it in my own hands.  It’s the perfect weight for wearing and yet, not a slow knit. I love the roundness of the yarn, the touch is amazing, and the gorgeous variation in color make you want to keep knitting to see more.”

Madelinetosh colours have a subtle variegation that compliments this design wonderfully. Each skein has a delicate fluctuation in colour which increases the contrast in the textured stitch pattern and the ripple of the cables. Our sample uses the linen soft shade of ‘Antique Lace’, but there are other neutrals that are catching our eye…

  2. oh, thats would be fun if I will win, the modell is so toll.
my favorit color is Robin-Rot-Brust. I ever like to read your site.
    hope I have a chance.

    • Well, I was having terrible trouble choosing, but then I got as far as Vishnu, and it seemed to just shine through the screen at me, jewel-like.
      So Vishnu it is!

  3. I want for your blog on the other side of the world as for me it arrives on Friday. I love reading it. I would be thrilled to win the colour Silver Fox

  4. Nutmeg has been on my hitlist for a while now. And having just finished my first MadTosh cardigan in another colour way, I am desperate to use it again. This pattern has gone straight to the top of my queue.

  5. My favourite Mad Tosh colourway is Composition Book Gray and this fabulous jumper would look wonderful in that colourway.

  6. I love Sugarplum, it would work so well with my existing wardrobe but Tern is fabulous too, I may have to knit it twice!

  7. I’m in love with this pattern, and the colors available are to die for!!! I could see this in Coquette or in Thyme….

    Simply Beautiful!!!

  8. Magnolia leaf would be puuuuuuurfect! But your stock is too low! So I’d choose Fig (but would 10 skeins be enough, I doubt it…)
The patterne is just amazing <3

  9. That pattern is the ideal sweater for me and I’d knit it in Robin Red Breast to make me feel warm all winter and thinking of mulled wine and spices.

  10. I would knit it in Amber Trinket to show the wonderful colours of Autumn against the beautiful stitch detail of the pattern.

  11. I just love the fig and purple basil. But the subtle shading of Molly Ringwald is just soft and delicious and would really show of the sous sous pattern to its absolute best!

  12. Sugarplum makes me dream of skies at sunset on a far away island… nice to travel so far with a beautiful sweater!

  13. I love Norah and her patterns I have been following her for years, she is from my area and will be at my LYS in December. I have met her twice and have all her pattern books. Her cable work is amazing. I think the model color is beautiful and would choose that.

  14. Hello
For me following a dancer BUSINESS ,name of this model suits me perfectly !!!! as I love the knitting …….
For me : MADELINETOSH Merino DK and Mica
    Good day to you ……

  15. I would choose Venetian, because it is just the right colours with which I should like to make this elegant loose-fitting sweater for a special neighbour. This colour with this design will be a perfect combination for Iris.

  16. All the colours are stunning but think I would pick Norway Spruce or Thyme as has dreamed of having a beautiful green oversized jumper since learning to knit from the first stitch n bitch book!

  17. Dried Rose! Although I am now in love with Molly Ringwald and want to go see it in person at my LYS. FWIW-I am currently knitting mittens in Amber Trinket and am completely in love with it. It would look incredible in this pattern.

So glad to see Norah is still designing and using other yarns. Berroco was my first LYS yarn and still a favorite but there are so many great yarns and to see them in a fabulous design is a testament to both Norah and the yarn company.

    Happy knitting!

  18. It would have to be worn denim – with a second one in Ink. So many gorgeous colours, it’s hard to choose!

  19. I would choose Antler for winter and hopefully the (Rudolph) red nose will be kept at bay by this cosy sweater!

  20. All the shades are so beautiful! However, I just LOVE the shade Nutmeg! it’s been on my knitting shopping list for a few months now – the gorgeous brownish yellow colour wasn’t quite right for spring or summer. But it’s perfect for autumn. I had been thinking about what project it would suit – Sous Sous is the answer to my question. :)

  21. Oooh….the calligraphy is perfect! Love that! I would do the first one in that color! Then… Who knows?

  22. Beyond beautiful! Of course, Norah’s designs always are! I would make Sous Sous in Antique Lace. It’s the most perfect neutral – why change a good thing? Crossing my fingers (and toes).

  23. I think this sweater would be to die for in purple basil… But it would look pretty good in all the shades . Gorgeous design!

  24. What a lovely pattern! I like Sugarplum but it is an obvious choice with the ballet inspiration, so it would have to be Isadora.

  25. Oh, that’s tricky; I think it would have to be either Composition Book Grey, or Logwood. It’s such a beautiful design.

  26. Tern is a beautiful colour and would be good all year round. It’s also a break from the Aran sweater which this design reminds me off. The subtle difference in colour and shape make this a modern twist on classic stitch patterns

  27. I would have to choose Citrus – a beautiful colour to heighten the senses and get your neighbours talking…:)

  28. Very difficult to choose: Magnolia leaf,… or Antique lace,… or Mica,… Never knitted with this yarn before, but the pictures are very tempting to try it out. It’s definitely a very gorgeous sweater.

  29. This jumper has gone straight into my queue!
I would love to knit this in silver fox, something to really show off the cables.

  30. They are all gorgeous, but Celadon would be the one for me. Love the pattern, if I don’t win it I’ll be buying it!

  31. Even though we are going into summer here in Australia, l am always planning my cooler weather knitting…it’s antique lace for me…

  32. Oh I am so in love with this beautiful pattern, what a gorgeous shape and so individual. It would look beautiful in any of the gorgeous colours but think my absolute favourite would have to be Sugarplum ! Fingers crossed this is next on my to-do list !

  33. tern – The softness of merino with the colour of a castle wall. A combination to knit from mum and dad.

  34. gorgeous pattern! I really like Norah Gaughan’s structural design…
Robin Redbreast- it’s a great red and this winter will need colour

  35. Superb range of colours but I think calligraphy would show off the pattern of the Sous Sous jumper. The design is perfect.

  36. Ooh Sugarplum for me – Love springs to mind. I just bought a beautiful necklace which would be the perfect marriage, each complimenting each other

  37. I love this sweater. Cables and lace is a favourite combo of mine and that shape of this is so intriguing. As for colour, I am a total sucker for anything purple-y/pink so Sugarplum would be my first choice. However, I also love Coquette. There’s something about that fuchsia shade that is so irresistible. Tosh Merino DK is heavenly to knit. Thanks for a great giveaway!

  38. It’s got to be Antique Lace – the pictures make it look stunning and the colour will compliment a whole range of colours (jeans, black skinny trousers, brown cords …….. )

  39. Steam Age, my two favourite colours and as a frustrated stream punk (if I were 20 years younger) the name eaxctly matches the associations of machinery and oil.

  40. Love the pattern, very me! I would knit it in Norway Spruce, beautiful colour, though hard to choose as there are so many gorgeous colours.

  41. I would like to knit it in magnolia leaf as I love the warm autumnal colour. Think it will look absolutely gorgeous. Has a lovely drape too which will be enhanced by the colour.

    • Hi!
As you can see, Sous Sous is designed with a lot of positive ease making the finished measurements of the bust rather generous. Use the measurements for the upper arm measurements to determine your size
      Hope that helps!
      Loop x

  42. Coquette would be great for this great new pattern from Norah! It looks to be a great little jacket for the fun of it. I see this color as one that is not so dark as keep the texture to pop. It is a lively color and the pattern is also.
