Step into Nordic Knits with Laine Magazine
There’s nothing quite like a Nordic knit, and no one knows them better than Finland-based Laine Publishing. That’s why we’re thrilled they’ve curated an extra special collection of Laine Nordic Knits, which is available to preorder today!
Clean, cold waters, verdant forests, vast mountainous meadows: the topography of the lands at the northernmost reaches of Europe are distinct and iconic, as are the textiles developed by the people who have lived there for generations. This special issue of Laine Magazine celebrates both the incredible knitwear of the Nordics and the beautiful lands that inspired them in 17 patterns accompanied by gorgeous photography.
This issue features designs by the legendary Danish designer Åse Lund Jensen (whose work is carried on by Isager), the lovely people behind the Norwegian yarn brand Sandnes Garn, and some designers whose Nordic connections may not be immediately apparent such as Caitlin Hunter, whose ancestral connection to Scandinavia was kept alive by her grandmother.
Each designer is introduced with their design, giving the knitter a sense of their connection to the Nordic tradition. Through the nine sweaters, three cardigans, two hats, plus a vest, slipover, and shawl in this issue, we’re all invited to explore the culture, history, and beautiful surroundings of the gorgeous Nordic countries.
In addition to the 17 knitting patterns featured here, Laine Nordic Knits features a range of fascinating articles, including an interview with the unparalleled Mette Wendelboe Okkels, whom you probably know better as PetiteKnit, and a feature on an artisanal spinning mill that makes yarn from Finnish sheep and alpaca wool.
The yarns and recommended alternatives used in this issue include Isager Spinni and Alpaca 1, Cyrano by De Rerum Natura, and Semilla GOTS by BC Garn. We can also recommend excellent yarns for any of these patterns. This issue launches 8 October, and we’ll ship preorders then. Remember to order anything you need sooner than that separately!
Life in the Long Grass Magazine — Issue 8
If your wanderlust is pointing you west instead of north-east, the Irish yarn maker Life in the Long Grass invites you for a windswept walk along the Wild Atlantic Way. In three cardigans, four sweaters, and three shawls, Issue 8 of the Life in the Long Grass Magazine guides you along the ruggedly beautiful west coast of Ireland. With sustainability, local employment, slow living, craftsmanship, and uncompromising excellence at its core, you can’t go wrong with Life in the Long Grass.
Leslie Oschmann of Swarm Home has created another unique beauty in the form of her new Chaffinch Pouches. These lovingly handcrafted beauties are perfect for organising heftier notions or keeping your wallet, keys, and other essentials together in a larger handbag. We love the durable fabric, the vibrant Dutch wax print lining material, and of course the fabulous silkscreen of a chaffinch.
We can’t wait to get new hues in some of our favourite bases on our needles! Snuggly Snefnug from CaMaRose is available in seven fabulous tones for autumn, from earthy neutrals to pretty pinks, and blissful blues and greens to boot! If you’re looking for the perfect yarn for your transition season sweater, this is the jackpot.
The gorgeous new colour Marsh Sky has also arrived from Lichen and Lace, in their heather sport, sock minis, and 1ply merino bases. This green, blue, and yellow melange looks just like the beginnings of fall foliage, or a corn maze on a crisp day!
Scheppjes Whirl is one of the most fabulously fun yarns to knit with. It looks super fun in a ball and the colour transitions while you knit are a constant surprise. You’ll find yourself wanting to keep going just until the next colour … and the next one … and the next! It’s a total blast, and we have no fewer than seven superb new colourways to choose from, so even if you’ve knit with these before, there’s sure to be something new just around the corner!
Merry Merino is on its merry way! This lovely yarn from Kremke Soul Wool is on sale right now. 99% of wool lovers agree this yarn is totally scratch free. Thanks to an environmentally friendly enzyme treatment that takes out some of the itchier bits, this is a great choice for people who love the fibre but have difficulty with some other yarns. This yarn works for just about anything you want to knit: scarves, hats, sweaters, baby blankets. The sky is the limit!
Happy knitting!
