Cosy Autumn Knits – Ultra Alpaca Chunky
Falling leaves and blustery days means that the wearing and making of cosy knits can truly start! We’ve certainly started to feel the nip of Autumn air in London, so we’re excited for the new chunky yarns that are coming to Loop. First to arrive is the Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky.
Much like our popular Ultra Alpaca Aran, this Chunky version is a mix of fine alpaca and Peruvian wool. While the alpaca makes a soft yarn with a slight halo, the wool gives it a little more structure than just pure alpaca. The two ply twist means a subtle texture to the knitted fabric, which you can see in this little cabled swatch we whipped up.
Our sample also shows the subtle heather to this beautiful yarn. As well as a selection of tweedy mixes some solid colours also make up this warm palette of 21 colours. Each is one a rich jewel shade to knit and wrap yourself in to defend against the grey and cold!
To accompany this new yarn the Ultra Alpaca Chunky booklet by Berroco has all the inspiration for snug knits. Especially the cute smile of a model who obviously loves her toasty cardigan!
Norah Gaughan, an established Berroco designer, is known for her detailed and elegant knits. She adds her signature look by making a simple jumper special with eyelet details and flattering slits.
We also have a sample ready to squish and try on in the shop. The chevron shaped Duchamp, modelled here by Loopette Ali, takes four skeins of the amazingly named ‘Berry Pie Mix’ – yum!
Or show off your cables with a two tone jumper and cute coloured cuffs.
Looking for the ultimate project to commit to over the colder months? The art deco inspired texture of this sweeping wrap makes a striking garment. Who needs a coat when you have your knitting!
Chunky yarn is always so satisfying for little projects, which also give you the opportunity to have fun with colour combinations.
Plus those generous souls at Berroco also have a free pattern to give to you lovely lot! The Casa Sonia scarf is great for beginners with a mix of knit and purl stitches. Download your copy from the Berroco website or email us if you want a paper copy included with your purchase of Ultra Alpaca Chunky.
While we’re speaking of giving things away, it’s time for another competition. This week you could win a copy of the Ultra Alpaca Chunky Booklet 349 and one skein in the colour of your choice! Just comment below letting us know which colour you would chose (you can see all the scrumptious colours here) and we will pick a name out of the hat next week. This competition will close at midnight on Wednesday 3rd September.
Happy Knitting and Crocheting!
Ooh I’m so excited for autumn knitting, I can’t wait! I love the patterns and the blueberry mix colourway is beautiful!
Winter White – it’s like snow!
I would choose the Oceanic Mix for Duchamp – warm & cozy for the cold Western Canada winter ahead.
They all look sooo beautiful, but I’m a sucker for blues, and am yearning for a hat or cowl in the Indigo Mix. It would look great with my beige Winter coat. ❄⛄❄
Wow, what great patterns! I would love to dive in with a skein of Tiger’s Eye Mix. Thanks x
Oceanic Mix for me too! They are all so lovely.
I’d go for Garnet Mix- gorgeous, deep colour! I think I’d make a hat or some mitts- so cosy!
So many beautiful colours. I think it would have to be Tiger’s Eye Mix
Beautiful colours!! I’d love to have Salt & Pepper. Thanks for the giveaway
I’d pick Caribbean Mix, so I could dream of sunnier climes as winter draws in! So lovely to see such beautiful brights to liven up the colder months.
Id love the garnet mix so warm and cozy against the gray skies of a Scottish winter
I love the berry pie mix. Such a pretty combo of red and purple.
wahoomerryf on Ravelry
Oooooh, the oceanic mix if I was lucky enough…. the colours remind me of the sea on a winters day but any colour would be good as they are all so scrummy x
I would like to knit the fingerless gloves in winter white to keep my hands warm as I type as the cold weather approaches.
I love the Garnet mix. Could use it to replace my favourite red cable hat I lost last year :(
Just perfect for some autumnal knitting! Beautiful colours – and names! Think my favourite is Irwyn green mix
I would choose the oceanic mix although the blueberry mix is a very close second as it looks so wonderful in your cabled sample! Fingers crossed and here’s hoping, thanks for the giveaway to give hope at sadness of the end of summer.
Emerald Mix is my favourite. A splash of bright colour on a winter sea!
The Berry Pie Mix brings alive what autumn means to me: blackberries out of hedgerows, autumn leaves & ploughed fields.. Am bursting to try this yarn, having made several garments with the Ultra Alpaca Aran which, so far is my favourite yarn by far!
Irwyn Green Mix for me.
The Tiger’s Eye mix is delicious. I’d love to win some!
Just wonderful these colours! I would love Berry Pie Mix as I would love to make a Berry Pie to eat but can’t as I am away from home for a while. So I would knit instead
The chunky yarn looks so warm and soft, I’d love to try a skein in Eggplant!
Love knitting with chuncky yarn and although I love all of the colours here I would definitely pick out the Lavender Mix as my all time favourite. I would probably make a hat and a pair of mitts with this great colour.
As soon as I saw the Apollonaire mitts in 7285 Oceanic Mix, I knew I had to have them! Chunky yarn is perfect to knit with in the winter when you need a quick project to snuggle!
Chianti for me. Such a rich colour. The days are much cooler now here in NE Scotland. This wool would make a cosy hat to wear when walking Archie, the dog.
Feeling a bit ‘all at sea’ today so it would have to be the gorgeous Oceanic Mix.
Oh how I love these beautiful jewel colours! I’d love the Emerald Mix one to make a splendid cowl with! Here’s hoping, fingers crossed xx
Blueberry mix!
Madison Delaunay in Pitch Black would be wonderful.
It seems a very versatile yarn with lovely colours.
The lavender mix is a beautiful color and would make a great fast knit for a toddler cap this autumn!

Fabulous autumn colours! I’d go for Salt and Pepper. Thanks for the chance to win!
Difficult choice, so many beautiful colours. Love the oceanic mix or berry pie mix.

I would choose eggplant to remind me of the heather coloured Scottish hills
Tiger’s eye for me please-a lovely spot of warmth for a grey day.
What a lovely range of colours. I would choose the Potting Soil to help me when playing hide-and-seek with my grandchildren in the woods this autumn!
Looks so cosy and I like nearly all the colours, but I would go for Steel cut oats.
All the colours are gorgeous. So warm and cheery for a dull winter’s day. My favourite though is the warm pink shade (7236). Reminds me of the yummy raspberry cake that I just polished off.
Would love the Azure Mix-so fresh.
Berry mix would be my choice.
It’s hard to chose, all the colours are so lovely. Leaning towards Chianti (7236, it’s scrumptious!
Love them all! Caribbean mix for me please.
these colors make me almost like autumn :) peat mix would be lovely
Eggplant looks so luxurious and regal and the yarn is so soft and warm. I see a soft an cosy winter scarf… maybe with some cabling for interest and texture.
I’d pick Irwyn Green Mix, but they are all lovely.
Steel cut oats would be a good choice for this and would go with a lot of nice things.
There’s too much purple in my stash at the moment – so I’d go for Chianti, as it’ll add a wonderful pop of colour to winter!
Lavender Mix is my favourite!
One of the reds would cheer up a cold day.
Love Norah Gaughan designs and the yarn looks lovely, warm and snuggly for the cold weather ahead !! All the colours look lovely but especially like the Light Grey

I’m getting a couple of hanks of the salt and pepper and the steel cut oats to make a baby blanket for a friend who is due in November! Its going to be a crochet number and I need to work out what size hook I need to work it with.
